British duo poised for French Open breakthroughs

In Paris, the second round of qualifying saw losses for Jay Clarke and Harriet Dart, and Jan Choinski, ranked as Britain’s third, pulled out of his scheduled game against France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Clarke’s defeat came at the hands of Thomas Faurel, a Frenchman ranked 382nd, with scores of 6-4, 6-3, preceding Dart’s 6-1, 6-4 loss to Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz, who holds the 159th spot globally.

Additionally, Bianca Andreescu, previously ranked fourth worldwide, and Karolina Pliskova, a two-time major tournament finalist, experienced qualifying round defeats.

The Canadian player Andreescu, who secured the 2019 US Open title, succumbed to Viktoria Hruncakova of Slovakia in a match ending 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-4.

Pliskova, the 34-year-old Czech player who was a finalist at Wimbledon in 2021 and the US Open in 2016, was defeated by Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera with a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Conversely, Sloane Stephens, a past US Open victor and the 2018 Roland-Garros finalist, advanced into the concluding qualifying stage after besting Italy’s Lisa Pigato 6-4, 6-1.

Shifting focus from Roland Garros, Cameron Norrie, Britain’s top-ranked male player, exited the Geneva Open in the second round.

Norrie, ranked 22nd globally and granted a pass in the initial round, fell to the 42nd-ranked Argentine Mariano Navone with identical 6-4, 6-4 set scores.
