Every other year, the Olympic Games, alternating between its summer and winter editions, gather elite global athletes to identify top performers.
This tradition has showcased remarkable human accomplishments throughout history. However, a venture named Enhanced, which positions itself as “a worldwide initiative fostering scientific understanding, medical breakthroughs, and pioneering athletic competitions to connect people and stimulate scientific advancement,” seeks to explore further human potential.
The Olympic Games enforce rigorous anti-doping rules, prohibiting the use of performance-enhancing substances. Enhanced conceived a concept to observe human capabilities in similar athletic disciplines, assuming the controlled application of specific PEDs, to gauge the extent to which scientific methods can boost achievement.
The Enhanced Games are scheduled to take place in Las Vegas during the Memorial Day holiday period. Disciplines will include aquatic sports, athletics, and strength training, alongside a strongman demonstration.
This competition has generated considerable contention among sportspeople, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), all of whom express concern regarding the implications of endorsing and promoting such an undertaking.
Below is comprehensive information regarding the Enhanced Games.
What Constitutes the Enhanced Games?
The Enhanced Games will encompass a range of contests spanning track and field, aquatic events, and powerlifting.
This event bears a strong resemblance to the Summer Olympic Games, with the key distinction being Enhanced’s intention to leverage available scientific knowledge to securely augment athletes and discover the limits of human capability.
According to the organization’s official site, “The Enhanced Games represent a novel international athletic contest created to expand the frontiers of human physical prowess. This competition deviates from conventional athletic paradigms by adopting scientific principles, inventive approaches, and quantifiable performance augmentation under supervised environments.”
Schedule of the Enhanced Games
The Enhanced Games are slated for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, specifically May 24th. Prior to the main event, media access and a medical conference are planned, as the organizing body asserts its commitment to openness regarding the scientific basis of the competition.
The contests on Sunday will be conducted before a limited audience of 2,500 invited guests.
Viewing Options for the Enhanced Games
Access to the Enhanced Games live stream will be available via the Roku Sports Channel. The involved entities publicized this agreement on May 11th, with the broadcast commencing at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
The inaugural activities of the Enhanced Games are set to commence at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time, broadcasting live across the organization’s official YouTube, Rumble, Twitch, and Kick channels.
Participants in the Enhanced Games
Forty individuals are scheduled to contend in this competition. Every competitor has the option to participate either with “enhancements” or without. Athletes are permitted to select their preferred type of performance-enhancing substances, while a portion of them opts to compete without any aid.
A number of Olympic competitors are included among the participants. Among the forty athletes scheduled to compete are British Olympic swimmer Ben Proud, American Olympic sprinters Fred Kerley and Hunter Armstrong, Barbadian Olympic runner Tristan Evelyn, and Olympic weightlifter Boady Santavy.
Strongman Thor Bjornsson, known for his role as The Mountain in “Game of Thrones,” is also anticipated to participate.
The Source of Disagreement
The primary point of contention stems from the stringent anti-doping regulations governing all other athletic contests, juxtaposed with this event’s promotion of such practices.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) athletes’ commission jointly issued a declaration, characterizing the games as a “renunciation of all our fundamental principles.”
“Encouraging the use of performance-boosting compounds and techniques conveys a hazardous signal, particularly to present and prospective generations of sportspeople.
“These substances carry the risk of severe, enduring health repercussions, including fatality — and motivating athletes to employ them is entirely negligent and ethically unsound. No degree of athletic achievement justifies such a sacrifice.”
In a demonstration of its gravity, World Aquatics implemented a novel regulation that forbids any athlete involved in the Enhanced Games, irrespective of their choice to use enhancements or compete without them.
Incentives for Enhanced Games Competitors
Every athlete has formally agreed to a contract for their involvement in the competition. A cumulative prize fund of $25 million is available to be won.
Although all competitors were given a foundational remuneration and “unparalleled athlete support,” additional incentives are also on offer.
“A sum of $1 million has been pledged for each new global record achieved in sprint events, specifically the 50-meter freestyle in swimming and the 100-meter dash in athletics, while the victors of individual events will each be awarded $250,000.”
