Brewers skipper Pat Murphy expressed his disapproval regarding the display made by his relief pitcher, Abner Uribe, on the pitcher’s mound during Tuesday evening’s game.
Following the conclusion of the eighth inning in Milwaukee’s 6-0 triumph against the St. Louis Cardinals, Uribe spun around and performed three prominent crotch-chop motions directed toward the Cardinals’ dugout.
The Brewers held a six-run advantage at that moment, and the last pitch of the inning was confirmed as legitimate subsequent to a challenge by the Cardinals, albeit by a narrow margin.
“I’m unsure what prompted him,” Murphy commented, as reported by The Associated Press. “He is indeed a passionate individual, but behavior of that nature simply doesn’t align with our team’s ethos.
“I felt ashamed by it. What’s the purpose? The score was 6-0. What was the rationale behind that action?”
Later, Uribe conveyed an apology for his conduct via an interpreter, yet he additionally criticized the Cardinals for an alleged incident from Monday’s game between the two clubs. According to Uribe, St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was giving signals that suggested he intended to instruct his pitchers to deliberately hit Brewers players.
He provided no further specifics regarding these claims, and Marmol chose not to comment on Uribe’s behavior.
“Everyone associated with this club is familiar with me and my character, and recognizes my past tendency for heightened emotion on the field,” Uribe stated. “My primary responsibility is to offer an apology to the Brewers organization. I extend my apologies to my fellow players, our coaching staff, and all the team’s executives. I acknowledge that such behavior, expressing oneself in that manner, is not permissible.”
“However, simultaneously, I find it equally unprofessional for their manager to be signaling towards our dugout, indicating an intent to pitch inside at our players.”
This year marks Uribe’s fourth season playing in the league. The twenty-five-year-old currently possesses a win-loss record of 2-2 and an earned run average of 4.42 across twenty pitching outings.
The Brewers have secured victories in nine of their previous twelve contests and are presently at the forefront of the NL Central division with a standing of 32 wins and 20 losses. The Milwaukee and St. Louis teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game set on Wednesday afternoon.
It remains uncertain whether Uribe will incur any penalties from the league for his Tuesday evening celebration, though Murphy confirmed he has already addressed the occurrence with him.
“I have great affection for this young man. Trust me, I truly care for him,” Murphy declared. “He possesses numerous positive qualities. He has contributed immensely to our team in various capacities, yet that behavior is simply not permissible. Therefore, regardless of the underlying circumstances, such actions cannot be condoned. For the sake of his colleagues and all considerations, it will not be endured, plain and simple.”
