Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka’s aspirations for the French Open championship were extinguished as she suffered a complete collapse, leading to a devastating quarter-final loss against Diana Shnaider, marking another surprising outcome in the current competition.
Sabalenka, who had reached the final at Roland Garros in the previous year but lost, held a commanding lead of 6-3, 4-1; however, the dynamic of the match abruptly changed, igniting an incredible resurgence from Shnaider.
The 25th seed from Russia, participating in her inaugural Grand Slam quarter-final, dominated by securing 12 out of the concluding 13 games, ultimately triumphing with scores of 3-6, 7-5, 6-0, thereby achieving a colossal upset.
The Belarusian athlete, Sabalenka, stood as the sole remaining Grand Slam singles victor in the wide-open women’s bracket and was widely considered the overwhelming contender for the championship.
Shnaider is set to compete against qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the semi-finals, following the Polish player’s victory over Anna Kalinskaya earlier on Wednesday.
