Daniel Cormier a ‘fan’ of Justin Gaethje making things personal with Ilia Topuria.

Justin Gaethje has intensified his verbal sparring leading up to his championship unification match against Ilia Topuria, a move that Daniel Cormier fully endorses.

The atmosphere between Topuria and Gaethje was initially amicable until “El Matador” released a satirical funeral video depicting “The Highlight” as one of its subjects. Gaethje retaliated against his adversary for UFC Freedom 250 during a segment on FOX News Australia, targeting Topuria’s marital separation from Giorgina Uzcategui.

Cormier published a fresh video on his YouTube platform, detailing his rationale for not objecting to Gaethje’s personal remark (information attributed to MMAJunkie).

“I consistently appreciate when verbal jabs accompany a bout — particularly a championship encounter and especially one of such significance, featuring the most iconic setting for any fight in the sport’s history, the White House — where two championship contests will unfold before what is anticipated to be the largest fan gathering ever witnessed in mixed martial arts,” Cormier articulated.

Cormier reinforced his view, stating that provocative language sustains audience interest and could attract an even larger viewership to the landmark occasion scheduled for June 14.

“It’s essential to have elements surrounding the contest that compel the average spectator to exclaim, ‘I must witness this.’ I understand that the White House venue will attract many individuals who might not have previously been inclined. However, observing the diminished display of cordiality now, compared to before, is something I appreciate. I enjoy the narratives. I found it engaging when Ilia Topuria became upset due to Josh Hokit’s aggressive comments towards Alex Pereira. I enjoyed that particular press conference because I am an enthusiast of this sport.”

Both Gaethje and Topuria will arrive at UFC Freedom 250 holding championship belts, yet only one will depart with the undisputed honor. Gaethje secured the interim lightweight championship by defeating Paddy Pimblett earlier in January. Topuria has been inactive in competition since he claimed the 155-pound title in June 2025.
