Alfie Hewett, representing Great Britain, experienced a defeat in the French Open wheelchair singles championship match for the second consecutive year, losing to Japan’s Tokito Oda.
The loss to top-seeded Oda, with a score of 6-3 6-3, came just one day after Hewett had secured the doubles title alongside his British compatriot, Gordon Reid.
This marks the fourth consecutive championship triumph at Roland Garros for Oda, who is twenty years old.
Hewett has now been defeated in five of the seven Grand Slam finals where he has faced Oda, a player who has demonstrated significant control over major singles tournaments lately.
Hewett remarked, “Firstly, my congratulations to Tokito and his entire team. I can’t recall the exact number of consecutive years you’ve claimed this title, but it certainly feels like an eternity.”
He continued, “While it’s undoubtedly pleasing to compete in the final once more, I am profoundly disappointed with my display; it is unequivocally not something I can take pride in.
Concluding his statement, he added, “Despite this, the week as a whole has been positive.”
