With Coventry City gearing up for their return to the premier division for the first time in decades, there is no misunderstanding about the difficult challenge that awaits them during the upcoming nine months.
Manager Frank Lampard guided the Sky Blues to a stylish promotion last term, bouncing back from their 2025 play-off semi-final loss against Sunderland to comfortably clinch the Championship trophy, ending the campaign 11 points ahead of their closest rivals.
Now, the ex-Chelsea and England midfielder is confronted with a completely different objective: keeping Coventry from immediately slipping back down after just one year in the Premier League.

If Lampard requires guidance on tackling the upcoming campaign, he has a convenient resource nearby, given that his uncle Harry Redknapp stands among the most seasoned modern managers and understands precisely what it takes to survive in the top tier.
Yet even Redknapp is wary of the daunting prospect before his nephew, notwithstanding the 48-year-old’s impressive managerial exploits during the previous season.
“He has caught me by surprise,” Redknapp confessed to FourFourTwo. “At the beginning of the campaign, I didn’t expect them to achieve promotion.
“I didn’t rate Coventry’s chances whatsoever. My expectation was that a top-six finish and a spot in the play-offs would have represented a highly successful year for him.”
For Coventry to avoid relegation in the upcoming season, Lampard must once more outperform all predictions.
“His main focus has to be entering the new Premier League campaign fully prepared,” Redknapp went on to say. “The real question is whether their squad possesses the quality to avoid relegation, and that is the big worry.”
Additionally, Redknapp noted how rapidly highly-rated managers who thrive in the Championship can find themselves in jeopardy.
“It is a scenario we have witnessed repeatedly,” he added. “Talented, knowledgeable young coaches who have performed brilliantly can suddenly see everything fall apart around them.
“The moment the team hits a rough patch, fans start phoning into radio stations. You hear clueless people calling up to say, ‘Oh, of course we are struggling, he is only a Championship-level manager.’
“It is complete nonsense.”
