While the two entrepreneurs were previously focused on securing an expansion team in Las Vegas, they unexpectedly shifted strategies to submit a bold bid to acquire the Lakers from Mark Walter. Walter had only acquired majority control of the franchise from the Buss family last year at a then-unprecedented valuation of around $10 billion.
This transition is a familiar scenario for Doncic, who will be playing under his fifth different majority ownership regime over the course of his professional career.
As noted by Christian Clark of The Athletic, this transaction means Luka will have competed under five distinct majority owners in the NBA by the time the sale is finalized, even though he is only heading into his ninth year in the league.
