According to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer, the New England Patriots have sent wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft selection.
This transaction alleviates some of the congestion within New England’s heavily populated receiving corps, while simultaneously providing Houston with valuable reinforcement at the wideout position.
Over the previous two years in New England, the 24-year-old Boutte established himself as a reliable secondary target, hauling in 76 receptions for 1,140 yards and finding the end zone 9 times across 29 appearances (which included 23 starts). During the team’s most recent playoff campaign, he paced the Patriots’ offense with a team-high 168 receiving yards over four postseason contests.
It makes perfect sense that Boutte would seek a change of scenery for the upcoming campaign. His projected playing time was thrown into uncertainty after the Patriots acquired A.J. Brown via trade and secured Romeo Doubs in free agency. With veteran Mack Hollins returning and emerging talents DeMario Douglas and Kyle Williams poised to earn expanded roles and more targets, Boutte’s opportunities were dwindling.
Rumors surfaced back in June, shortly after the highly anticipated trade for Brown was finalized, suggesting that Boutte may have discreetly informed the New England front office of his desire to be moved for the 2026 season.
This upcoming year represents a pivotal juncture in Boutte’s career. Drafted originally in the sixth round, he is entering the final season of his rookie contract and will become an unrestricted free agent in the spring, meaning a productive campaign with the Texans gives him a far better opportunity to boost his financial leverage than he would have had fighting for targets in New England’s congested offense.
The trade was prompted by a devastating injury in Houston, where wideout Jayden Higgins suffered a torn ACL during training camp workouts, sidelining him for the entirety of the 2026 campaign.
Throughout his tenure with the Patriots, Boutte served mostly as an outside receiver who excelled at stretching the field vertically, though he occasionally took snaps inside the slot. His statistical output was at its highest during the early portion of the previous season, prior to a nagging hamstring issue that flared up again in the playoffs, notwithstanding a few standout postseason performances.
Measuring 5-foot-11 and weighing 197 pounds, Boutte is expected to serve as a secondary receiving option in Houston’s offense next to Nico Collins, though the steady development he demonstrated over his last two seasons hints at an unlocked potential that could further elevate his performance.
