10:00 AM ET Update: Fabrizio Romano reports that Newcastle has settled terms with both Manchester City and Nico Gonzalez, with both teams prepared to “begin exchanging paperwork today.”
Newcastle United has at last secured seasoned midfielder Matthias Jaissle, finalizing a crucial component of their summer reconstruction following the exits of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
The Tyneside club started Monday with growing optimism about securing Manchester City’s midfielder Nico Gonzalez, as Simon Jones of the Daily Mail noted that both sides were “progressing steadily toward a deal” worth about £50 million (€58 million).
Just a few hours afterward, the breakthrough was verified by Fabrizio Romano. Newcastle has established an oral accord with City for the transfer of Gonzalez for a fixed £47 million (€54 million) alongside an extra £3 million (€3.5 million) in potential performance bonuses.
“BREAKING: Newcastle have struck an oral agreement with Man City for Nico González, here we go!” shared Romano. “The price is understood to be £47m with £3m in add-ons, with the player giving his approval after overnight advancements. Nico is prepared to embark on the #NUFC project, where he is set to be a crucial figure.”
This deal marks a swift intensification of talks following David Ornstein’s initial report in The Athletic last week regarding Newcastle’s preliminary discussions with City. Although Gonzalez at first seemed intent on staying in Manchester to earn his spot, his stance evolved as Newcastle intensified their pursuit and City encouraged his departure.
Enzo Maresca also facilitated the exit by leaving Gonzalez on the bench throughout Sunday’s Premier League win against Bournemouth, opting to play defender Marc Guehi in the midfield role instead. Concurrently, Manchester City finalized a £86 million (€100 million) agreement for Lille’s midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, further complicating Gonzalez’s prospects of securing regular first-team minutes.
The 24-year-old moved to City from Porto in February 2025 for a fee of €60 million (£52 million). He featured in 41 games in all tournaments over the previous campaign, featuring in the starting lineup 28 times, yet found it difficult to cement a permanent spot in Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven.
Newcastle is in a position to provide that exact starting role, positioning him as the focal point of Jaissle’s midfield and the wider team. Having transferred Guimaraes to Arsenal and Tonali to Tottenham, Jaissle has had to construct a squad around emerging prospects such as Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur, and Lewis Miley. Gonzalez will now join as the seasoned anchor for this revamped midfield engine room.
