Scheduled for Oct. 31, the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic offers wagering opportunities long before the gates open. Bettors can take advantage of the Breeders’ Cup Classic Future Wager, with action starting on Friday, Aug. 28 and wrapping up on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Wagerers have the opportunity to back 23 distinct horses individually or opt for the “All Other Starters” selection for any unlisted competitors across two separate betting windows. The subsequent future wagering pool is scheduled from Friday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 27.
Placing bets ahead of time carries significantly higher hazards than wagering on the actual day of the race. Since there is no assurance that your chosen horse will actually make it to the Breeders’ Cup Classic starting gate, you should hold out for larger prices to compensate for this uncertainty.
Because of these factors, the initial program odds for #21 Sovereignty (4-1) and #6 Forever Young (5-1) appear somewhat unappealing. Each has a highly impressive resume: Sovereignty secured the 2025 Horse of the Year title and cruised to victory in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes on Aug. 8, whereas Forever Young captured the title in the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
However, history is against Forever Young justifying his 5-1 price, as only a single runner has achieved consecutive or multiple victories in this race over its 42-year history. Meanwhile, Sovereignty’s absence from the 2025 edition due to a sudden sickness perfectly highlights the dangers of ante-post wagering.
Selecting the #24 All Other Starters (8-1) field bet also carries substantial risk. A decade has passed since a Breeders’ Cup Classic champion emerged who was not already prominent enough to be singled out in an August futures pool.
Given these points, where lies the smart money? I find that #16 Phileas Fogg (25-1) presents the most appealing price. This pace-setting gelding has crossed the wire first in 11 of his 24 lifetime starts and put on an absolute clinic in the July 4 Suburban Stakes Presented by Subourbon Life, carving out a gate-to-wire, 10-length triumph in an impressive 2:01.70.
The competitive strength of that Suburban lineup has since been validated. The third-place finisher, Tiztastic, subsequently ran a respectable fifth (finishing just six lengths back) in the Whitney. Antiquarian finished fourth in the Suburban before moving up to grab third in the Whitney. Furthermore, Original Sin rebounded from a ninth-place effort in the Suburban to capture second in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic Stakes on Aug. 22.
While Phileas Fogg has occasionally teased elite potential throughout his career, the Suburban was undoubtedly his career-best effort. He is currently on course to challenge Sovereignty and Forever Young in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup on Sept. 18; should he pull off a surprise victory there, his current 25-1 odds for the main event will plummet.
