Competing in the last Grand Slam of his professional journey, Monfils guaranteed a truly memorable evening by defeating Paraguayan rival Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in a 2-6 6-1 6-2 6-0 comeback.
The ex-world number six has become the most senior male competitor to triumph in a US Open main-draw fixture since Jimmy Connors, who similarly achieved a win on his own 40th birthday back in 1992.
Spectators in New York heightened the joy of the milestone for Monfils by spontaneously breaking into a chorus of Happy Birthday during his on-court interview following the match.
“Competing on the day I turn 40 is incredibly meaningful,” remarked the 2016 US Open semi-finalist, who revealed last year that he plans to step away from the sport at the conclusion of this season.
“The energy [in New York] is consistently incredible—I love being here. My goal is always to deliver top-tier tennis and provide a fantastic spectacle.”
Speaking directly to the thousands of supporters who generated a party vibe inside Louis Armstrong Stadium, he went on to say: “You are all amazing—let’s carry this same energy into the second round.”
