Toto Wolff, the head of the Mercedes team, confesses that he has been astonished by the swift development displayed by Kimi Antonelli during the 2026 Formula 1 championship, comparing him to an “AI agent” that never stops learning.
Currently in his sophomore year in F1, the 20-year-old Italian racer was rapidly promoted to the pinnacle of motorsport to succeed Lewis Hamilton, following the veteran’s departure from the Silver Arrows before the 2025 campaign.
Throughout his rookie season, Antonelli experienced a highly inconsistent run, finding the European events especially challenging. While this prompted several observers to doubt Wolff’s choice in elevating the teenager, the team principal remained steadfast in his support.
“His initial season progressed exactly as anticipated,” remarked the Austrian. “I always predicted we would witness flashes of genius alongside some tough periods.
“At the start of the year, he seemed somewhat overwhelmed by the circumstances, like a deer caught in headlights. Once settled in the cockpit, he showed remarkable speed, though he lacked consistency.
“Afterward, he went through a difficult phase, failing to secure points for more than nine consecutive races. I recall Spa being particularly brutal, which left him quite discouraged. It was at Monza that I first told him, ‘look, you need to snap out of this.’ Yet, we never wavered in our belief. That is precisely the reason we entrusted him with this drive.”

Those erratic performances vanished following the winter hiatus, coinciding with the dawn of Formula 1’s fresh regulations as Mercedes transformed from occasional podium finishers into genuine championship contenders once more.
Parallel to the team’s upward trajectory, the young Italian’s individual results soared, placing him at the summit of the F1 championship ahead of George Russell, who currently trails by 66 points. Wolff concedes that this dramatic shift took even him by surprise.
“He returned from the winter break and hit the ground running with an intensity that caught everyone off guard,” Wolff stated.
“His capacity to digest the lessons of his rookie year has been incredible. He attended every grand prix, observing the media scrutiny and intense spotlight firsthand. He internalised and integrated those experiences perfectly, which explains the outstanding performances that followed.
“Nevertheless, his rate of evolution remains both astonishing and magnificent. To me, he behaves like an artificial intelligence system that constantly refines itself through machine learning. That is how fast he adapts.
“His youth is undoubtedly a massive advantage here, giving him the cognitive and intellectual capacity to keep scaling new heights.”

In spite of this spectacular resurgence in form—highlighted by a stunning charge to victory from 19th on the grid in Monza following an engine penalty—Antonelli remains completely grounded.
He has maintained a level-headed approach after every win, while carefully analyzing the rare errors he has committed during 2026. Armed with a healthy points cushion over his veteran partner, Antonelli emphasizes that he is simply focusing on one grand prix at a time.
“I am just focusing on each individual event because anything can happen in racing,” Antonelli commented to Sky Sports following the Italian Grand Prix. “Things went perfectly today; we had a great chance and capitalized on it, but next up is Madrid, which presents an entirely fresh obstacle.
“We must perform at our absolute peak because nobody has driven this circuit before, and being fully prepared will be crucial to getting the most out of our practice sessions and general setup.
“I intend to savor this triumph before shifting my attention to the next round, maintaining that exact focus all the way to the season finale.”
The Formula 1 championship resumes this coming weekend with the Spanish Grand Prix, departing its long-term home in Barcelona to debut at the brand-new circuit in Madrid.
