Jalen Duren is currently the most prominent unsigned free agent remaining on the market this summer. The restricted free agent has been locked in a contract standoff with the Detroit Pistons since June, and with media day only a week away, both parties still appear far from resolving their differences.
Detroit recently raised its proposal to a five-year, $200 million contract—up from its prior offer of $180 million to $190 million—but Duren has refused to yield, reportedly feeling slighted by the organization’s approach during the negotiations, per ESPN.
“Throughout the offseason, Detroit’s proposals had been sitting in the $180 million to $190 million range over a five-year span—which, from what I gather, featured performance incentives such as weight conditions. Those factors definitely influenced the situation,” ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Monday. “While things had been relatively silent on this matter for several weeks, discussions have since restarted, and I’ve been informed that Detroit’s current proposal to Jalen Duren stands at $200 million over five years.”
During the 2025-26 campaign, Duren enjoyed a stellar breakout year, posting averages of 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest, which secured him a spot on the All-NBA Third Team and helped propel Detroit to the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Nevertheless, despite his exceptional regular-season performance, his postseason difficulties against Cleveland and Orlando cooled Detroit’s eagerness to hand him a blockbuster extension this offseason.
The transaction involving the Lakers trading two firsts and two swaps to the Jazz for Walker Kessler, and subsequently giving him a $130 million, four-year deal, further complicated the situation. On one hand, Duren could point to his superior production compared to Kessler’s as justification for a significantly higher annual salary. On the other hand, the Lakers were the sole franchise with both the financial flexibility and the desire to acquire an expensive center this offseason, which removed Duren’s top outside destination and established an incredibly high bar for any potential sign-and-trade deal with other franchises.
This situation has produced a months-long deadlock that only becomes trickier as other players from the 2023 draft class secure new extensions—including Duren’s teammate Ausar Thompson. While Detroit appears eager to break the logjam and finalize an agreement before training camp opens, they face a steep uphill battle in repairing their relationship with the rising star big man, even if a contract is signed in the coming days.
