The encounter with Shelton set a record for the tournament’s latest-ever conclusion, serving as one of multiple matches at Flushing Meadows that extended deep into the early morning.
Alexander Zverev, who went on to win the title, saw three of his initial five matches conclude after 1:00 AM, whereas Venus Williams did not wrap up her opening-round contest until 2:00 AM.
“In my opinion, it is simply too late,” Alcaraz remarked regarding the late-night sessions.
“Although spectators remained for the final match, the stadium would likely have been completely full if it had been scheduled at an earlier hour.
“I would prefer to see some adjustments to the scheduling, perhaps setting a curfew around 11:00 PM or finding a more suitable solution.”
At 23 years old, Alcaraz is among several competitors who have been sidelined for significant portions of the season due to physical setbacks.
Great Britain’s Jack Draper has dealt with a persistent arm issue that eventually forced him to cut his season short for rehabilitation, and Alcaraz’s competitor Jannik Sinner was unable to play in the US Open because of a knee problem.
During the US Open, the Spanish player indicated that he plans to skip certain events moving forward to prioritize his psychological and physical well-being.
This week, from September 25 to 27, he is set to represent Team Europe at London’s O2 Arena in the Laver Cup.
This team competition features a European squad led by captain Yannick Noah going head-to-head with a Team World lineup managed by Andre Agassi.
“Having some of the finest players on Earth standing alongside you as teammates is an unusual but wonderful experience,” remarked Alcaraz.
“We compete as if our very lives are on the line, which is exactly what makes watching the Laver Cup so compelling.”
Between 2024 and 2025, Alcaraz and the Italian Sinner shared eight Grand Slam championships, carving out a defining rivalry of their generation in the process.
Fitness issues have limited them to just a single encounter this year, in which Sinner claimed victory in the Monte Carlo Masters final to secure the top spot in the world rankings.
“I haven’t messaged him constantly, but I sent a few texts when he was dominating, particularly during the early part of the season,” Alcaraz continued.
“I miss his presence on the tour and competing against him, as he constantly drives me to elevate my performance.
“Fans are highly anticipating those matchups, so I believe things will improve once we play more often.”
