Alex Ovechkin to Retire After 2026-27 NHL Season

Celebrated Washington Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin, who sits atop the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring leaderboard, has declared that the 2026-27 season will mark the conclusion of his illustrious career.

“During the summer, my family and I came to the decision that this upcoming season will be my last in the NHL,” the 41-year-old Ovechkin shared through an official statement issued by the Capitals on Monday.

“My passion for this sport is immense, but deep down, I know this is the correct choice. I wanted to share this news prior to our home opener to express my gratitude to everyone in the hockey community, all those who have supported my family and me through both our victories and painful defeats. None of my achievements would have been possible without their support.

“I look forward to playing this final season alongside my teammates, and we are determined to make it an unforgettable one. I intend to cherish every single moment with my wife and kids, our loyal fanbase, and everyone who has been joined me on this incredible hockey journey.”

Referring to the Capitals’ upcoming home-opening matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night, Ovechkin concluded: “See you Wednesday, babes!”

Additionally, the Capitals shared a personal address that Ovechkin delivered to his teammates on Monday morning.
