Alexander Volkanovski feels there is a definitive top challenger lined up for his featherweight crown.
Volkanovski successfully retained his 145-pound championship by stopping Movsar Evloev via TKO at Saturday’s UFC 333 event. Following this victory, speculation mounted regarding whether he might hang up his gloves or pursue a different path.
While the featherweight king left open the possibility of stepping up to lightweight to chase a second belt, he maintains that if he remains in his current division, Aljamain Sterling ought to secure the upcoming title opportunity provided Sterling triumphs in his next matchup.
“If we’re discussing who is most deserving, my vote goes to Aljo. Particularly if he gets another victory, especially facing a high-risk opponent such as Kevin. However, should Aljo fall short, then Jean becomes the obvious pick. The outcome of that match truly dictates everything,” Volkanovski stated during an interview with Ariel Helwani.
This logic holds up from Volkanovski’s perspective, given that a victory over Vallejos would solidly position Sterling as the premier contender. Such a matchup would carry immense weight, offering the former bantamweight kingpin an opportunity to capture a second weight class title against Volkanovski.
At the same time, numerous fight fans are eager to see a showdown with Silva, given that the explosive Brazilian striker possesses power and high-octane offense capable of presenting real challenges for Volkanovski.
Alexander Volkanovski remains receptive to a lightweight bout
Even with compelling matchups waiting at featherweight, Volkanovski continues to entertain the prospect of climbing up a division.
The current landscape at 155 pounds remains uncertain, with Justin Gaethje potentially facing retirement or stepping into the cage against Volkanovski. Should Gaethje decide to walk away, Volkanovski indicated he would willingly relinquish his featherweight strap to battle Arman Tsarukyan for the unclaimed lightweight title.
“Arman repeatedly mentions that he expects Justin to call it a career. If Justin actually steps down, the path becomes crystal clear. I will give up the featherweight championship and square off with Arman for the vacant title. Plain and simple. Honestly, that scenario is starting to thrill me even more than a match with Gaethje,” Volkanovski further noted.
It remains uncertain whether UFC management favors the idea of Volkanovski changing weight classes. Nevertheless, staying put at featherweight allows him to go toe-to-toe with either Sterling or Silva in his upcoming defense.
