The Vancouver Whitecaps FC are rapidly approaching the conclusion of the 2026 MLS regular season.
Following a commanding 4-1 victory against San Diego FC at BC Place and favorable outcomes elsewhere on Wednesday night, the ‘Caps have strengthened their position at the top of the Western Conference standings (58 points).
With this achievement, Jesper Sørensen’s team is nearing the goal of securing the No. 1 seed in the West, which would grant them home-field advantage throughout the 2026 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and potentially the final on December 18.
“I feel very positive about our performance. I recognize that everyone is paying attention to the standings and so on,” Sørensen remarked to the media after the match. “Last year we ended up losing our last match and finished second instead of first, and it appeared to be heading that way again.”
“Therefore, it is more crucial to focus on how we play.”
Historic display
A year after making it to the MLS Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup finals, the Whitecaps are aiming to advance even further in 2026.
With their four goals on Wednesday, they have shattered their club record for goals in a season, reaching a total of 67 with two matches remaining.
Summer U22 Initiative acquisition Aleksa Cvetković kicked things off early by converting on a penalty box sequence for his first MLS goal. Talisman Brian White added to the tally with a header just before the halftime whistle, increasing the advantage, and Ryan Gauld put the score at 3-0 shortly after the break.
Superstar Designated Player Thomas Müller also made his return in the second half following an injury layoff of nearly a month, injecting newfound energy into Vancouver’s offense.
Young Ecuadorian talent Bruno Caicedo capped it all off with the record-setting goal in the 76th minute, completing a fast break with his sixth score of the season. The 21-year-old winger was recently ranked 15th on the league’s 22 Under 22 list and is quickly becoming one of the most thrilling young talents in MLS.
White’s milestone
White’s goal in the first half marked his 18th this season but, more significantly, it also served as his 100th career MLS goal. The former Red Bull New York SuperDraft pick has blossomed since joining Vancouver in 2021 and now rightfully ranks among the league’s elite strikers with a personal best of 18 goals and 2 assists in 2026.
“Reaching 100 goals is something I’ve always aspired to, if I’m being honest,” stated White. “However, at the end of the day, the focus should be on winning titles with the team. Achieving individual milestones is great, but winning the MLS Cup is the priority.”
Vancouver needs only one more victory to clinch the top seed in the West, which will guarantee them home-field advantage in the playoffs at least up until the conference finals.
It will also ensure qualification for the 2027 Champions Cup.
They have two opportunities to accomplish this, starting with a match against Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday (3:30 pm ET | Apple TV) before hosting CF Montréal on Decision Day.
“We are prepared to attack the last two matches,” Sørensen remarked. “And we hope that will be sufficient to win the Western Conference regular season.”
