Alexander Zverev celebrated attaining the top spot in the world rankings by comprehensively defeating Great Britain’s Arthur Fery to secure a place in the Vienna Open semi-finals.
Requiring a mere 58 minutes to lock in an emphatic 6-0 6-2 triumph, the top-seeded German is poised to overtake Jannik Sinner as the men’s world number one.
Having required medical attention for a leg issue late in his round-of-16 triumph over Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday, Fery appeared far from fully fit during the match.
This contest served as a rematch of their Wimbledon semi-final earlier this summer, where Zverev brought Fery’s impressive tournament run to an end in straight sets.
“In my view, Arthur presents a contrasting style to my previous opponent. Although he lacks that same raw power, his tactical execution is outstanding,” Zverev noted.
“Despite the 6-0 6-2 result, he shouldn’t feel overly discouraged. Considering this is his debut season on the main Tour, his achievements have been remarkable.”
Mirroring his Wimbledon performance, Fery defied expectations to reach the quarter-finals in Vienna with a defeat of former world number five Musetti, though the 24-year-old proved no match for Zverev.
Over the course of the clash, Zverev conceded a mere six points on his service games while creating nine break point opportunities on Fery’s serve, converting five.
Having already captured the French Open and US Open crowns this season, the German tennis star is now pursuing his third trophy of the year.
Capitalizing on injury setbacks suffered by Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner, he surpassed both players in the standings to become only the second German man to reach world number one, following Boris Becker’s milestone in 1991.
In the semi-finals, Zverev will go up against either fifth-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur or Italian contender Matteo Berrettini.
The opposite semi-final fixture features second seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain taking on third-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev.
Alcaraz, a winner of seven Grand Slam titles, earned his spot by overcoming seventh seed Tommy Paul of the United States 6-4 7-6 (7-2) in their quarter-final encounter.
Medvedev dispatched French player Adrian Mannarino 6-2 6-3 in their last-eight clash, a result that guarantees the 30-year-old a berth at the end-of-season ATP Finals.
Marking his seventh appearance at the tournament, Medvedev links up with Zverev, Alcaraz, and Ben Shelton, who had previously qualified.
Meanwhile at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, top-ranked Elena Rybakina was forced to pull out of her quarter-final match against Leylah Fernandez due to a neck issue.
Rybakina’s exit occurred just twenty-four hours after she locked in the year-end world number one ranking in women’s singles.
Advancing via walkover, Fernandez will now square off against Russian player Kamilla Rakhimova in the semi-finals.
