Ocon’s F1 Journey: A Story of Success, Even at Its End

There isn’t much reason to believe otherwise: it appears more and more probable that this may represent the conclusion of Esteban Ocon’s ongoing Formula 1 journey. A journey that has been filled with numerous highlights, a few podium finishes, and a victory attained while driving a car that wasn’t genuinely competitive.

He created many of the chances that presented themselves – both on the racing circuit and throughout his career journey. Even if it concludes here, that journey has already exceeded the expectations one might have had considering his beginnings.

There are few narratives in contemporary F1 akin to his, where individuals from humble beginnings – lacking affluent families or lavish sponsors from the outset – reach the top tier of motorsport, much less accomplishing what Ocon has.

However, his sudden exit from Haas might signify the closure of this chapter in his racing saga. Circumstances could potentially shift. He could make a comeback, as he still ranks among the world’s elite drivers. Yet, it’s challenging to envision how that could unfold at this moment.

Imagining Ocon on the grid at the start of the 2027 season in Bahrain—if that season indeed kicks off in Bahrain—is nearly unfathomable, with most positions already filled and the remaining ones likely having multiple contenders vying for them. There’s hardly any logic to suggest that he’d suddenly surge ahead of these rivals.

The second seat at Cadillac still holds uncertainties. Colton Herta boasts an American passport and Yuki Tsunoda stands as another potential candidate. Liam Lawson’s prospects are still unresolved, but Red Bull isn’t suddenly inclined to introduce a 30-year-old Frenchman into their junior team’s mix. That essentially comes down to a competition between Lawson and the 19-year-old Bulgarian Nikola Tsolov.

What seems more plausible is that Ocon may once again have to secure a position on the sidelines, awaiting a chance until someone unexpectedly falters.

There are numerous instances of drivers who have eventually returned after pursuing that route. Even among the current participants, Alex Albon, Valtteri Bottas, and Nico Hulkenberg act as examples. Ocon himself can be placed within that category: he made a comeback to racing with Renault in 2020 following a year spent as Mercedes’ reserve driver.

However, as uncomfortable as it may be to acknowledge, the sudden conclusion of Ocon’s 2026 season enhances the notion that a return could be even less probable than if he had concluded the year with Haas.

Speculating about the specifics of the situation between him and the team is unproductive. Furthermore, it would be inappropriate to amplify the various rumors swirling around.

What’s certain is that an incident occurred during the Mexico Grand Prix weekend. And whatever transpired was significant enough for Haas to replace Ocon in the car with Ryo Hirakawa, a driver making his Grand Prix debut at the age of 32 – an occurrence not seen since Andre Lotterer jumped into a Caterham at Spa in 2014.

What unfolded was serious enough that not only did Haas choose to bench him for that weekend, but it also claimed he would not race for the team again this season.

Indeed, one could argue that the situation was also somewhat advantageous for Haas. They now have the chance to offer Rafael Camara, their future competitor, some real race experience. This will certainly aid the Brazilian, but also benefit the team, allowing them to pinpoint improvement areas, get to know him better, and reap the various advantages that come with managing a young driver in a Grand Prix setting.

Nevertheless, Haas wouldn’t have dismissed Ocon simply for that reason.

When a driver clashes with his team, it’s undoubtedly not an ideal circumstance. When the situation escalates to the point where the team removes him from the car, it’s even more dire. And when the driver in question is Esteban Ocon, it’s hard not to consider his reputation and view Mexico 2026 as another blemish upon it.

Reputation is a complex concept.

It frequently develops based on its own criteria, influenced by unpredictable circumstances and, in today’s world, through the enigmatic nature of social media algorithms. When something negative arises, the modern era provides ample means to amplify the effect, distorting it beyond proportion and transforming the entire scenario into a spectacle.

Nevertheless, reputation exists. Ocon has earned a reputation for occasionally being a challenging individual to collaborate with.

After all, his last stint with a team ended in a notably comparable manner, with Alpine requesting him to vacate his seat before the conclusion of the 2024 season.

And let’s not overlook the considerable backlash regarding his collisions with teammates.

In reality, it’s not as detrimental as the social media backlash suggests, with many of those incidents not even being attributed to him. A review of those specific occurrences reveals a narrative that isn’t nearly as clarified as the usual social media uproar would have you think.

But it is what it is. Moreover, anyone contemplating Ocon as a potential future driver will inevitably harbor that bias against him, regardless of whether it’s justified or not.

There’s a curious disconnection between that persona and the individual who appears in interviews.

Believe it or not, Esteban Ocon ranks among the most pleasant individuals in the F1 paddock to engage with. Warm, conversational, and incredibly courteous. Nevertheless, many people would assert that he can sometimes be difficult to interact with.

This topic came up during my interview with him for GP Racing magazine a few years ago. We visited him at his training facility in southern France and then had an extensive discussion in the car en route to his home in Geneva.

I recounted that a sporting director from an F1 team had once labeled Ocon as one of the toughest individuals to contend with in discussions held within the stewards’ room.

I inquired if he perceived that as part of his identity. He acknowledged that he could see where that view may come from.

“But yes, when something needs to be said, especially in Formula 1, it must be voiced,” he informed me back then. “There’s no time to squander. It’s crucial to be direct. Maybe I come off as overly forthright at times, but… I refuse to let anything slip after I’ve invested so much effort into getting to this point. Just witness how many hours I dedicate daily here – and I won’t allow myself to be, you know, steamrolled by anyone, whether it’s a team manager, team principal, or world champion.”

We also discussed how that aspect of his personality may have been cultivated in the early stages of his career, when his future hinged not just on success but also on his capability to assert himself and be as insistent as necessary to gain support.

His family had sold their home to finance his karting endeavors, but they simply could not afford the expenses required for his advancement through the junior ranks.

He needed to adopt a combative nature, as nothing was handed to him.

One must appreciate that – just as one must regard his entire journey with admiration.

“That might be the most accurate way to express it: I bore the weight of my family from a very tender age,” he stated. “And I don’t present this to elicit sympathy: it was a worthwhile endeavor, and we succeeded in achieving our goals – and now everything is well. But it’s evident that I had to confront these sorts of pressures, had to be assertive when necessary, and had to be heard when people were not necessarily attentive or convinced. And, you know, to capture the attention of these businessmen and investors when you’re just 13 or 14, ensuring they hear you, is no small feat.”

It’s perhaps unjust to perceive this as now being an issue for him within Formula 1. After all, he reached this height thanks to his inherent characteristics. A decade-long career at the summit of motorsport, along with a Grand Prix triumph to his credit, is something that no one can ever take away from him.

As melancholic as it may be, perhaps that is simply all there was left for Ocon in Formula 1.

There’s a certain irony that what could likely have been Ocon’s final F1 weekend as a racing driver coincided with the weekend Kimi Antonelli clinched the world title with Mercedes.

Because Ocon was once considered Toto Wolff’s favorite protégé. Wolff even proclaimed it was merely a matter of time before Esteban would find himself in a Mercedes seat.

It was never meant to happen. Perhaps there was a rationale behind that, after all.

Ocon undeniably possesses speed. One does not sustain a decade-long career in F1 without being quick, not to mention winning a Grand Prix. Yet Formula 1 encompasses a unique landscape. Only those who bring the complete array of qualities necessary to reach championship caliber actually make it there.

There is no argument that, on the basis of sheer speed, many more drivers are capable of clinching a world title than there are actual champions. Luck plays a pivotal role. Various circumstances heavily influence career trajectories. Some elements simply did not align in Ocon’s favor, or perhaps his comprehensive package wasn’t compelling enough during critical moments—for someone like Wolff, for instance, to decide to steer him into a Mercedes seat during the time of opportunity.

After all, Ocon was on hand at the moment Lewis Hamilton opted to depart for Ferrari. By that point, Toto had already taken a new shining star under his wing.

And he was ultimately vindicated in his decision.

No matter the future holds, even if Ocon never manages to reclaim a position on the grid, there is absolutely no reason to reflect on his career with sorrow or remorse. The journey he has undertaken is one that countless drivers would sacrifice nearly anything to experience. It’s slightly disheartening—and indeed somewhat absurd—that it could reach a conclusion like this. Nonetheless, it is certainly not a measure by which he should be assessed.

And also…

As challenging as things may seem now, even if it feels improbable, we discuss someone who has already realized an incredible dream: a child from a small French town, whose father was a mechanic, making it all the way to F1.

Don’t dismiss him just yet.

And regardless of what transpires next, he is deserving of commendation for what he has already accomplished.
