Precisely as Manchester United fans believed the team’s leadership choices could not seem any less cohesive, a new disclosure has exposed the evident absence of footballing expertise within Old Trafford.

While looking back offers clear clarity, particularly in sports, details from The Athletic indicate that ahead of the 2024 FA Cup final facing Manchester City, football director Jason Wilcox advocated for Russell Martin as a credible contender to take over from the under-fire Erik ten Hag.

At that juncture, the organisation needed an established manager to halt the decline that had developed toward the end of Ten Hag’s spell. Fortunately, Wilcox’s recommended option was judged overly limited in scope, though the board eventually hired Ruben Amorim for a brief stint.

How Russell Martin came close to taking the Manchester United helm

The freshly appointed INEOS leadership team was executing a thorough evaluation of Ten Hag’s governance during the summer of 2024, diligently assessing potential managerial candidates.

Of the figures suggested, Wilcox advocated for Martin, apparently influenced significantly by their tight working bond.

Wilcox himself had previously recruited Martin to Southampton in mid-2023 throughout his concise period as director of football for the Saints. Although Martin successfully guided Southampton back into the top flight through the Championship play-offs in May 2024, arguing that he possessed the credentials to command English football’s grandest club was difficult to justify.

The direction Martin’s managerial path took following that 2024 Wembley victory highlights precisely how catastrophic such a hiring might have turned out.

After reaching the Premier League, Martin’s rigid insistence on slow-paced possession play fell apart in legendary fashion. His Southampton team gained infamy for defensive blunders, losing the ball in and near their penalty box while conceding goals at a troubling rate.

Martin’s evident unwillingness to adjust or modify his tactical philosophy earned him a standing as a stubborn purist unprepared for a top-tier relegation battle—or arguably elite management altogether, much less the intense pressure of the Old Trafford job.

Manchester United eventually selected Amorim to replace Ten Hag in November 2024. Though his period in charge proved chaotic, entrusting the position to Martin could have resulted in a far worse scenario.

Despite the defects Amorim’s squad exhibited under his guidance, Martin’s commitment to building play from the back with a fragile backline would almost certainly have left Manchester United exposed to severe beatings by quality opponents.

This disclosure emerges at an uncomfortable moment for Wilcox’s professional standing. The ex-Manchester City director was recruited to Carrington by Sir Jim Ratcliffe to establish a contemporary, data-led football operation, yet Wilcox now encounters criticism suggesting he is in over his head.

Promoting his past Southampton associate for one of global football’s most grueling managerial positions conflicts with the elite standard Manchester United aim to cultivate. At minimum, it has revealed a deficiency of foresight from a director assigned to return an iconic club to the apex of European competition.

Currently, Michael Carrick remains in the head coach role on an interim basis, head of recruitment Christopher Vivell is drawing interest from Bayern Munich, and the squad continues to be divided, notwithstanding Tuesday evening’s energetic comeback facing AS Roma in the Champions League.

The organisation has not yet escaped its predicament, and with a new managerial decision looming in the near future, this selection may prove to be the most pivotal of Wilcox’s term.
