Over the past few campaigns, Alex Scott has cemented his reputation as one of the most promising young talents in English football, turning into a crucial Premier League figure at Bournemouth and earning a senior England cap under Thomas Tuchel.
Securing a transfer to the Cherries in 2023 marked another milestone in a journey that began with him playing youth matches in the Channel Islands prior to a perfectly timed transfer to Bristol City in January 2020.
This occurred right before the Covid-19 crisis ground both football and everyday existence to a halt, with Scott acknowledging that agreeing terms with the Robins at that exact moment profoundly altered his career trajectory.
Scott reflects on his switch to Bristol City
Scott handed himself a senior appearance for Guernsey back in August 2019, setting a record as the Isthmian League club’s youngest footballer at 16, prompting Bristol City to swiftly act on an existing relationship between the clubs.
“An established partnership was already present,” Scott explains to FourFourTwo regarding his transfer to the Robins. “At 14 or 15 years old, I was aware that senior Guernsey talents had previously travelled to Bristol City for trials, and I figured that if I reached a high enough standard and made the first team at Guernsey, I might earn an opportunity to trial as well.
“Fortunately, I received that chance and managed a hat-trick in my trial match—I remember thinking, ‘Surely that guarantees a contract!’ [Laughs] I remain immensely grateful to all at Guernsey and for the pathway leading to Bristol City.”
The agreement was finalized right before the global pandemic suspended competitive football, leaving Scott deeply conscious of his good fortune in getting the contract signed in the nick of time.
“Indeed, I spent two months with Bristol City on a scholarship playing for the under-18 team,” he proceeds. “I was thoroughly enjoying myself, but then the hiatus struck, forcing me to return to Guernsey until August.”
Even with the surrounding chaos and turbulence impacting the sport as well as Scott personally, he managed to extract the positives from his circumstances.
“It wasn’t entirely heartbreaking,” he notes. “I had been away for two full months—my longest stint away from home—so returning for a while was quite pleasant. Though it was a tragic period globally, I got the chance to spend time with my family and friends.
“Once I returned to Bristol City, that was the moment everything in football became serious.”
Right as Scott focused on progressing his career, the pandemic prevented Guernsey from returning to non-league fixtures until October 2021; thus, had the transfer not transpired, the midfielder’s trajectory could have taken a completely different path.
“I likely wouldn’t be in this position today,” he acknowledges. “It’s uncomfortable contemplating those scenarios. Luckily, things fell into place for me, though it easily could have turned out entirely differently.”
Scott provided his comments during an event at PUMA’s flagship London store on Oxford Street, which marks the brand’s premiere flagship location in Europe.
