David Benavidez continues to pursue a significant bout against Canelo Alvarez.
Benavidez ascended to the cruiserweight category last Saturday in Las Vegas, confronting Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez for the WBA and WBO championships. Despite being a strong favorite in the odds, Benavidez nonetheless impressed boxing aficionados. He inflicted damage on Ramirez’s right eye, causing “Zurdo” to repeatedly drop to a knee. Benavidez secured a knockout victory in the sixth round.
Following the contest, Jim Gray questioned Benavidez about his subsequent aspirations. “The Mexican Monster” unequivocally stated his sustained desire for a confrontation with Alvarez (as reported by MMAFighting).
“My aim is simply to provide the audience with the spectacle they desire,” Benavidez declared. “I observed Canelo present in the venue. Allow me to pose this to the supporters: Is a Canelo versus David Benavidez match what you wish to witness? [The crowd erupts in cheers] No more discussion needed. That fight must not be overlooked. I hold Canelo in high regard as an exceptional champion, but I, too, am an exceptional champion. Let’s make it happen! …
“I retain my championship status at 175 pounds. I hold titles at both 200 and 175 pounds. Therefore, if they wish to contend at 175, then let’s engage at 175!”
Alvarez was present within the T-Mobile Arena before Benavidez’s bout against “Zurdo.” Alvarez was there to back his colleague and past adversary, Jaime Munguia, who secured the WBA super-middleweight championship by unanimous decision over Armando Resendiz.
Mike Coppinger recently communicated that Alvarez is expected to contend for the WBC super-middleweight belt against Christian Mbilli this September. Benavidez disregarded this potential matchup during a media session preceding his cruiserweight championship victory. He queried who truly held an interest in seeing Alvarez face Mbilli.
