Boulter falls to Ruse in Austrian opener

UK tennis player Katie Boulter experienced an initial elimination at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz Open, losing to Elena-Gabriela Ruse from Romania.

The athlete, aged 29, was overcome by the 87th-ranked Ruse with a score of 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) on the clay court. Ruse is now scheduled to compete against either Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine or Ann Li from the United States in the upcoming round of sixteen.

Boulter conceded her initial two service games during the first set, yet she managed to break her opponent’s serve on two occasions before ultimately being defeated in a tie-break.

The third-ranked British player secured a third break of Ruse’s serve, gaining an early lead in the second set; however, her adversary promptly retaliated in what became a fluctuating contest.

Boulter successfully fended off a match point when trailing 6-5, compelling a subsequent tie-break. Nevertheless, Ruse secured two mini-breaks, advancing to a 5-2 lead before concluding the match with her serve to secure victory.

Boulter, ranked 62nd globally, achieved her fourth WTA Tour championship at the Ostrava Open in February and progressed to the quarterfinals at Mexico’s Merida Open.

Nonetheless, before this particular defeat, her performance at Indian Wells and the Miami Open saw her exit in the second and third rounds, respectively.
