In Paris, the second round of qualifying saw losses for Jay Clarke and Harriet Dart, and Jan Choinski, ranked as Britain’s third, pulled out of his scheduled game against France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
Clarke’s defeat came at the hands of Thomas Faurel, a Frenchman ranked 382nd, with scores of 6-4, 6-3, preceding Dart’s 6-1, 6-4 loss to Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz, who holds the 159th spot globally.
Additionally, Bianca Andreescu, previously ranked fourth worldwide, and Karolina Pliskova, a two-time major tournament finalist, experienced qualifying round defeats.
The Canadian player Andreescu, who secured the 2019 US Open title, succumbed to Viktoria Hruncakova of Slovakia in a match ending 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-4.
Pliskova, the 34-year-old Czech player who was a finalist at Wimbledon in 2021 and the US Open in 2016, was defeated by Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Conversely, Sloane Stephens, a past US Open victor and the 2018 Roland-Garros finalist, advanced into the concluding qualifying stage after besting Italy’s Lisa Pigato 6-4, 6-1.
Shifting focus from Roland Garros, Cameron Norrie, Britain’s top-ranked male player, exited the Geneva Open in the second round.
Norrie, ranked 22nd globally and granted a pass in the initial round, fell to the 42nd-ranked Argentine Mariano Navone with identical 6-4, 6-4 set scores.
