The football club Chelsea has officially announced Xabi Alonso as their new main coach, following the departure of Liam Rosenior in late April.
This declaration was made public under a day after the London-based team’s close loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup final match.
Alonso is set to formally assume his responsibilities at Stamford Bridge starting July 1st, indicating that temporary manager Calum McFarlane will lead the team for their concluding two Premier League fixtures against Tottenham and Sunderland during the upcoming week.
The Spanish coach had a previous coaching role with Real Madrid, though he was let go by the major La Liga club after a tenure of under eight months.
Before his time at Real Madrid, he managed Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, where he led them to secure their inaugural league championship.
Regarding his new role, Alonso communicated via Chelsea’s official club site: “Chelsea stands as one of the most prominent football institutions globally, and I am filled with profound honor to accept the position of manager for this esteemed club.
“My discussions with the club’s owners and sports management have made it evident that our aspirations align. Our objective is to forge a squad that can consistently contend at the elite level and vie for championship honors.”
