The 2010 World Cup journey for Uruguay proved to be quite an emotional ride for La Celeste.
Having failed to qualify for the 2006 tournament, the squad finished first in a group containing France, Mexico, and the host nation South Africa, advancing to the semi-finals before ultimately being knocked out by the Netherlands.
This achievement marked Uruguay’s most successful World Cup run since securing fourth place in 1970, though the two-time champions had to struggle immensely just to qualify for the finals.
Forlan recalls his unforgettable World Cup qualification goal
With their hopes of qualification on the line, the squad journeyed to Quito for their second-to-last qualifying fixture against Ecuador, fully aware that a loss could shatter their World Cup dreams.
While the difficulties of competing at an elevation of 2,800 meters are widely recognized, this specific encounter would become one of the most iconic displays in the career of forward Diego Forlan.
“We were on the second-to-last matchday of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers,” the ex-Manchester United forward Forlan recounted to FourFourTwo.
“We found ourselves in Quito, a location where playing is constantly tough due to the elevation. During the second half, Antonio Valencia found the net to put them up 1–0.
“Our backs were against the wall, as a loss would have completely ended our chances of traveling to South Africa.”
Trailing by a goal under grueling circumstances, Uruguay desperately required a leader to take charge.
“Immediately following that setback, we executed a brilliant play where I set up Luis Suarez to level the score at 1–1,” he went on. “However, only a victory would do.
“During our final offensive play, the Ecuadorian goalkeeper brought down Edinson Cavani in the penalty area. Being the most senior player, I stepped up to take the penalty and embrace the pressure.
“Despite the immense stakes, I do not recall experiencing much anxiety. I executed the shot flawlessly, sending it right into the top corner of the net.
“That crucial victory earned us a playoff spot against Costa Rica, through which we successfully booked our ticket to the World Cup.”
