Dodgers’ Max Muncy, D-backs’ Ildemaro Vargas exit after violent first base collision.

A baseball match between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday saw a moment of unexpected physical contact.

In the fifth inning, both Max Muncy, the Dodgers’ third baseman, and Ildemaro Vargas, the D-backs’ first baseman, were forced to leave the contest following a severe impact near first base. The Dodgers subsequently stated that Muncy was taken out due to “shortness of breath and to rule out a concussion.”

Post-game, D-backs manager Torey Lovullo reported that Vargas was being evaluated daily for a contused thigh, rib cage, and neck, though several x-rays, as reported by Jack Sommers of SI, showed no fractures. He is scheduled to sit out Friday’s encounter with the Washington Nationals.

Meanwhile, Muncy cleared concussion tests but was characterized by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts as “a bit bruised,” according to Sonja Chen of MLB.com. He too will be absent from his team’s game on Friday.

During the critical play, Muncy sprinted aggressively toward first base after hitting a ground ball, as Vargas converged from behind the base to secure the out. Both individuals arrived at the base nearly at the same instant, transforming the moment into a standoff where neither yielded, resulting in a head-on collision.

Each player instantly collapsed, visibly distressed. Muncy’s headwear and eyewear contributed to injuries for both; the edge of his helmet struck Vargas’s temple, and his glasses were driven into Muncy’s eye socket. They appeared disoriented and were subsequently substituted by Santiago Espinal for baserunning and Pavin Smith at first base.

Muncy was declared safe following the incident, a call that proved crucial when Ryan Ward followed up with a double, bringing Espinal home to initiate the game’s scoring. Ward himself then crossed home plate on a single hit by Dalton Rushing.

Nevertheless, the D-backs mounted a comeback, leveling the score in the eighth inning and clinching victory in the ninth through a walk-off home run hit by Ketel Marte against Tanner Scott.

This triumph allowed the D-backs to avoid a sweep in the four-game series, having lost the initial three matchups. Despite this, the Dodgers will depart Arizona maintaining a 6.5-game advantage in the NL West standings.

A serious injury to Muncy would represent a considerable setback specifically for the Dodgers. Before Thursday, the seasoned player was widely expected to be the starting third baseman for the NL in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, boasting a .251/.346/.513 batting line and a club-leading 14 home runs.

Vargas, a seasoned player with a decade of experience, is in his third tenure with Arizona. Prior to Thursday, he held a batting line of .286/.314/.448 and was second among D-backs players with 60 hits.
