Following a pre-2024 contract proposal of four years and $75 million from Skubal’s camp, Detroit’s management failed to follow up with any extension offers. Instead, the team’s executives chose to deal Skubal at a time when they sat a mere 2.5 games back from a postseason berth in a highly competitive AL race. This trade occurred despite his rapid recovery from elbow surgery, which saw him return to action in just about six weeks. While some fans might justify their boos by pointing to his projected departure via upcoming free agency—notwithstanding Detroit’s lack of contract initiatives—every other factor points toward showing him appreciation.
“He deserves a warm reception tonight,” noted Detroit manager A.J. Hinch ahead of the matchup, as reported by USA Today. “His contributions to this community, the supporters, and the franchise demand immense appreciation.”
