Coco Gauff initiated her campaign to retain her 2025 French Open title with an impressive performance on Tuesday. Gauff comfortably secured a victory in the opening round against her compatriot, Taylor Townsend, prevailing in straight sets with scores of 6-4, 6-0.
Despite Gauff being heavily favored going into the contest, her success was not a foregone conclusion. Gauff had previously been defeated by Townsend in their sole prior encounter in 2019.
Nevertheless, Gauff has significantly improved since that time, a fact she demonstrated through her swift triumph over Townsend this Tuesday.
Statistically, this wasn’t an overwhelming display from Gauff, who recorded merely a single ace alongside five double faults during the game. Yet, when her first serve found its mark, Gauff consistently secured the point with remarkable efficiency.
Townsend, on the other hand, experienced difficulties with her service game, successfully landing only 53 percent of her initial serves. In such instances, Townsend opted for a more conservative approach to ensure the ball was in play. While this strategy reduced her double fault count, it consequently resulted in a reduced win rate on her serves, as she couldn’t sufficiently pressure Gauff.
Gauff delivered an equally robust showing in the initial round last year, where she overcame Olivia Gadecki with scores of 6-2, 6-2. Gauff maintained an unbeaten record in sets throughout the 2025 French Open until the quarter-finals, at which point Madison Keys compelled her into a three-set encounter. Aryna Sabalenka was the sole other competitor who managed to claim a set from Gauff during the previous year’s French Open.
Following her success on Tuesday, Gauff progressed to the second round of the 2026 French Open, where her next opponent will be Mayar Sherif. They have only competed against each other once before, with Gauff emerging victorious in that instance.
