UFC Hall of Fame inductee Georges St-Pierre expresses concern that Conor McGregor might not achieve his past form in his return bout at UFC 329.
Following a nearly five-year hiatus from competitive action, Conor McGregor, a former two-division UFC titleholder, is set to face Max Holloway in a much-anticipated clash at UFC 329, concluding International Fight Week. McGregor’s last appearance was at UFC 264, where he sustained a leg injury against Dustin Poirier; his subsequent planned return at UFC 303 was canceled due to a toe issue.
Numerous uncertainties surround McGregor’s forthcoming scheduled return to the cage, particularly given the half-decade absence since his last bout. A common question is whether McGregor can effectively reproduce the caliber of performance he displayed when he captured two world championships in his peak years.
McGregor appears to be re-energized and refreshed, eager to silence his critics this upcoming summer; however, Georges St-Pierre, a UFC Hall of Famer, anticipates a potentially unfavorable result after such a prolonged period of inactivity.
Georges St-Pierre expresses concern over a ‘distressing’ conclusion to Conor McGregor’s forthcoming return bout
During a recent discussion with Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie, St-Pierre elaborated on the challenges associated with resuming competition after an extended break from the UFC.
“It’s crucial during your preparation to meticulously simulate the atmosphere and the degree of difficulty you’re destined to encounter,” St-Pierre commented regarding McGregor.
“Remaining within your comfort zone throughout your training camp is detrimental. It’s imperative to incorporate training partners who challenge you. This extends beyond merely skill development and sparring sessions. Occasionally, it’s beneficial to introduce individuals you’ve never trained alongside, leading to a sense of apprehension and uncertainty about their movements. The thought might be, ‘They play rough, and they intend to inflict damage.’ This aspect holds significant importance.
“He’s making a comeback for significant objectives, not trivial ones,” St-Pierre added concerning McGregor. “That seems fitting. Naturally, if I were part of Conor’s team, my advice would be, ‘Prepare yourself, as this will be an incredibly tough fight.’ However, he possesses the capability to succeed. The outcome will be intriguing. It would deeply sadden me to witness him return and fall short of his previous capabilities or even a semblance of them. Such a scenario would be truly disheartening.”
St-Pierre remained inactive for a four-year period before ultimately claiming the UFC middleweight championship by defeating Michael Bisping at UFC 217. McGregor aspires to achieve a comparably astonishing outcome as he seeks to advance his record against the former BMF title-holder to 2-0 in their career rivalry.
