The Norwegian national team commenced its first World Cup fixture since 1998 exactly as hoped.
In his inaugural World Cup appearance, Erling Haaland netted two goals during the initial half, propelling Norway to a decisive 4-1 triumph against the less-fancied Iraqi side.
This triumph marked Norway’s initial World Cup success since progressing to the Round of 16 during the 1998 tournament in France. Furthermore, a prominent figure in global football instantly asserted his influence in his premiere showing on the sport’s grandest platform.
Initially, Norway maintained possession, yet they couldn’t register an attempt on target within the first quarter-hour of the match. Nevertheless, it was merely a matter of time before the Norwegian squad and their star striker found their rhythm.
In the 29th minute, Iraq relinquished possession deep in Norway’s half, presenting Norway with an opportunity for a swift counter-attack.
David Møller Wolfe received a pass close to the Iraqi net and crossed the ball from the left flank, locating Haaland at the far right corner. Haaland then unleashed a powerful one-time shot directly into the top of the goal, leaving Iraqi goalkeeper Jalal Hassan utterly helpless.
Shortly thereafter, Iraq responded as Aymen Hussein headed the ball in, bringing the score to parity at 1-1.
However, Haaland swiftly restored Norway’s lead by capitalizing on an error made by Iraq.
Iraq committed a defensive blunder, sending a weak back-pass towards goalkeeper Hassan. Haaland anticipated this, accelerating towards the loose ball before Hassan could reach it, and slotted it into the empty net.
Following this, Norway asserted dominance through sustained possession until Leo Østigard’s header from a corner kick secured the match for Norway in the 76th minute.
The Norwegian team further extended their lead when a late own goal from Iraq increased the final score to 4-1.
This victory propelled Norway to the summit of Group I, following France’s 3-1 triumph over Senegal earlier on Tuesday. While both nations now possess three points, Norway holds a superior goal differential, largely due to Iraq’s late own goal.
