The Minnesota Vikings are bringing back Harrison Smith for the 2026 campaign, as he agreed to a one-year contract extension to remain with the only NFL franchise he has ever represented.
On Saturday night, NFL reporters Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported the update, revealing that the iconic defensive back is finalizing a contract valued at $12.25 million.
Furthermore, the agreement includes performance bonuses tied to the postseason that can elevate the total payout to $16.25 million.
Following the 2025 campaign, rumors circulated that Smith might hang up his cleats after a spectacular 14-year run with the franchise. However, as the new season drew nearer without any official retirement announcement from the prospective Hall of Fame candidate, it became clear that another year on the field was highly probable.
According to Garafolo, Minnesota’s head coach Kevin O’Connell alongside defensive coordinator Brian Flores actively campaigned for Smith’s comeback. Currently in excellent shape, the safety is projected to suit up for the upcoming Sunday matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
Previously, the organization had brought in veteran defensive back Jamal Adams, but those plans were derailed when he sustained a season-ending injury during their initial exhibition contest versus the New York Giants.
Considering his deep understanding of Flores’ defensive scheme and the high-caliber play he still offers at 37 years old, Smith emerged as the most sensible replacement.
“This outcome felt almost inevitable. Had Smith decided to step away from football, he likely would have made that declaration shortly after the previous season wrapped up,” noted Will Ragatz, who covers the Vikings for Bring Me the Sports.
“Ultimately, as kickoff drew closer, the desire to share the field with his teammates once more and pursue a championship proved too strong to resist. This provides a massive boost to the defensive unit. Smith proved last year that he remains a formidable presence while serving as the primary pre-snap coordinator for Brian Flores’ system.”
