Kentucky Derby Pick to Win: $100 Betting Guide

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Given the twenty thoroughbreds competing and the vast array of wagering options for the Kentucky Derby, deciding where to place your initial wager can be challenging. However, with no clear frontrunner this season, there are compelling chances for profit—provided our race analysis is accurate.

Typically, the Kentucky Derby becomes easier to navigate by categorizing the contenders into distinct groups.

My top-tier contenders, those I consider most probable to secure victory, listed in descending order of my confidence, include Emerging Market, So Happy, Chief Wallabee, Further Ado, and Commandment. Since Emerging Market is my primary selection for first place, I intend to build various complex wagers around this horse, aiming for a payout if it finishes within the top three positions.

The second-tier (Tier B) horses, which I believe possess an outside prospect for victory, consist of Renegade, Potente, and Danon Bourbon.

Third-tier (Tier C) contenders that I anticipate could secure a placing and thus elevate the payouts for trifecta or superfecta bets are Incredibolt and Golden Tempo.

Regarding wagering, I’m opting to disregard all other competitors. When allocating a $100 budget for Derby bets, one must make strategic decisions, and I perceive a significant distinction separating Incredibolt and Golden Tempo from the remaining outsiders.

This is my proposed distribution for the $100 betting fund:

  • A $10 straight win bet on Emerging Market, anticipating odds of approximately 10-1.

  • $2 exacta wagers pairing Emerging Market to finish first with all Tier A horses for second place (totaling $10).

  • $2 exacta wagers pairing all Tier A horses to finish first with Emerging Market for second place (totaling $10).

  • A $10 straight win bet on Potente, primarily because it’s uncommon to find a Bob Baffert-trained horse with such favorable odds.

  • A .50 cent trifecta wager placing Emerging Market in the first position, followed by any combination of Tier A, Tier B, and Tier C horses in the second and third positions (cost: $36).

  • A .50 cent trifecta wager with Tier A and Tier B horses for first place, Emerging Market for second, and Tier A plus Tier C horses for third place (cost: $21).

  • A .10 cent trifecta wager featuring Tier A and Tier B horses for first, Tier A and Tier C horses for second, and Emerging Market for third (cost: $4.20).

The total outlay amounts to $101.20, slightly exceeding the planned budget, but we will manage this adjustment. Should Emerging Market secure a top-three finish, our chosen combinations provide a reasonable chance for an exacta or trifecta return. If it does not perform as hoped, our hopes will then rest on Potente, or we will accept our losses and look forward to the following year’s event.

Regardless of the outcome, I extend my best wishes to all participants; savor Derby Day, and crucially, wager with prudence, never risking more than you are prepared to forfeit.
