Selekhmeteva competed for the first time representing Spain, following her recent change of national affiliation.
Kostyuk chose not to engage in the traditional handshake with her rival, consistent with the established practice among Ukrainian athletes to forego handshakes with competitors from Russia or Belarus.
Since the start of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the 23-year-old has openly voiced strong disapproval of Russia and its allied nation, Belarus.
“The Ukrainian populace serves as my primary source of inspiration,” Kostyuk stated.
“Upon waking this morning, I observed numerous individuals who rose and continued their daily routines, persistently assisting those requiring aid.
“I anticipated a significant number of Ukrainian supporters would be present today. My acquaintances from Ukraine arrived to show their backing, and I am delighted by their attendance.
“I feel immense self-pride. I believe that contest stood out as one of the most challenging encounters throughout my professional journey.”
On the WTA Tour this season, only Mirra Andreeva, with 15 victories, has secured more wins on clay than the currently successful Kostyuk, who has 12 wins and maintains an undefeated record on this surface in 2026.
Her next opponent will be Katie Volynets, following the American’s decisive 6-3, 6-1 victory over Clara Burel of France.
