Kyle Freeland’s record day spoiled by 12-4 Brewers loss

The final game on a warm, blustery Sunday commenced with potential but concluded with a highly imbalanced outcome. This served as a characteristic conclusion to a series where the Rockies managed to keep every contest feeling tight, a perception hard to grasp solely from the ultimate tallies.

Colorado held a 3-1 advantage entering the sixth inning, largely due to a stellar pitching performance from Kyle Freeland, before the situation rapidly deteriorated. Ultimately, the Brewers tallied an additional eleven runs, securing a series sweep with a decisive 12-4 victory.

Freeland Achieves Rockies Milestone

In the fifth frame, Kyle Freeland caused Luis Rengifo to hit a routine fly ball for an out, thereby officially surpassing Aaron Cook as the club’s all-time leader in innings thrown. This significant achievement occurred during a game where Freeland’s pitching effectiveness was at its peak for the season, prompting spectators to offer a standing ovation that temporarily paused the contest.

Prior to that pivotal fifth-inning event, Freeland’s sole challenge had been a demanding second inning, which began poorly after a grueling ten-pitch confrontation with Andrew Vaughn resulted in a base hit. Vaughn later crossed home plate following a Rengifo double, though Freeland managed to exit the inning by getting Blake Perkins to ground out.

Freeland delivered three consecutive scoreless innings, marked by five ground ball outs, following that second inning. These grounders prevented Jackson Chourio, who had consistently troubled Freeland throughout the game, from scoring after hitting doubles in both the third and fifth frames.

His return to the mound for a third pass through the batting order in the sixth inning proved to be ill-advised. Freeland threw just seven more pitches, surrendering a sharply hit line drive single to William Contreras, who then scored on a triple from Vaughn that Jake McCarthy narrowly failed to catch on a diving effort.

This prompted the bullpen to summon Jaden Hill. Hill immediately conceded a home run to Brewers backstop Gary Sánchez, resulting in Freeland’s stat line showing a respectable, yet overshadowed, three earned runs on seven base hits across five innings. His outing today marginally reduced his season ERA to a persistent 7.81.

Inconsistent Batting Display

The Rockies quickly exploited some defensive lapses by the Brewers. During the initial frame, Willi Castro got on base due to an infield pop-up obscured by the sun, preceding Ezequiel Tovar’s RBI double to right-center, which Garrett Mitchell misjudged.

Tovar subsequently scored on a sacrifice ground ball hit by Hunter Goodman, which Vaughn mishandled at first base.

Milwaukee’s defense then stabilized, and starting hurler Shane Drohan composed himself for a mostly quiet subsequent three innings. During this period, Drohan fanned four batters, with the only Colorado players reaching base being Kyle Karros via a one-out walk in the fourth, and Troy Johnston, who started the third with a deep double.

The fifth inning saw Braxton Fulford barely miss a home run, settling for a double to left-center. This was succeeded by classic situational hitting, with Chad Stevens grounding out to the right side, advancing Fulford to third. Johnston then hit a fly ball to Brewers left fielder Chourio, who made a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to cut down Fulford at home plate.

Following a swift sixth inning, the Rockies eventually forced Drohan’s exit in the seventh, prompted by a single from McCarthy. The Brewers’ relief pitchers managed to leave McCarthy stranded, concluding the seventh. A comparable scenario unfolded in the eighth, where Castro recorded a soft single, only to be immediately caught in a double play initiated by Tovar.

During the final half-inning, prior to McCarthy’s game-ending strikeout, Goodman provided the remaining spectators at Coors Field with a final highlight: his 17th seasonal home run, a solo blast directly to center field.

Brewers Continued to Amass Scores

Jaden Hill’s ongoing difficulties persisted with an outing that culminated in the Rockies’ defeat. Entering in relief for Freeland in the fifth, Hill surrendered a home run to Sánchez on his initial delivery and recorded merely one out across 22 pitches.

Subsequent to the dinger, Hill conceded a flurry of four additional runs, resulting from a Mitchell double, free passes to Rengifo and Joey Ortiz, and base hits by Perkins and Brice Turang. Recognizing that Hill would not likely escape the inning promptly, Keegan Thompson was brought in to replace him.

Thompson assumed pitching duties with the mandate to complete the game, irrespective of the worsening score. For his initial two and two-thirds innings, he successfully contained the Brewers’ scoring, with Mitchell’s seventh-inning double being the sole exception.

The ninth inning then arrived, coinciding with Thompson facing the lineup for a second time. Contreras and Vaughn initiated the frame with consecutive base hits, which would have likely concluded Thompson’s appearance had the game been competitive. Instead, Thompson remained on the mound, proceeding to give up four runs through a Mitchell triple and doubles from Sánchez and Ortiz.

Before Thompson could strike out Chourio to conclude the inning, the Brewers had elevated their daily run total to twelve.

Instances of Untidy Play

The two-run surge in the opening inning commenced when Turang misjudged a typically simple pop-up, losing it in the sun’s glare.

As the game progressed, both sides frequently disputed umpire’s calls on pitches. Goodman succeeded in three of his five challenges as catcher, whereas Sánchez, the Brewers’ receiver, achieved only one successful overturn across three efforts.

Out in the field, McCarthy nearly executed two outstanding catches due to his impressive reach, yet ultimately failed to secure either, resulting in two triples being surrendered. The course of the game might have been considerably altered had McCarthy converted these opportunities into outs.
