LeBron James may retire this season, or return to Lakers/play elsewhere in 2026-27.

A commemorative final season appears unlikely to mark the conclusion of LeBron James’ distinguished professional basketball journey.

The celebrated four-time MVP and four-time champion of the league reportedly holds no desire for such an event, as per a Friday report from Dan Woike and Sam Amick of The Athletic, which outlined the Los Angeles Lakers icon’s possible future decisions and the ambiguity surrounding his path forward.

At 41 years old, James is purportedly wavering on his upcoming plans. Retirement following the current season remains a distinct possibility, according to the aforementioned Athletic piece, which referenced anonymous team and league informants discussing James with the publication.

Despite achieving his 22nd All-Star selection during his unprecedented 23rd NBA campaign, James is said to be strongly considering continuing his career, whether remaining with the Lakers or joining another franchise.

James unequivocally maintains a significant influence on the sport. He currently holds the title of Western Conference Player of the Week. While his notable performances occurred against a Golden State Warriors team without Stephen Curry, a Phoenix Suns team missing Devin Booker, and a struggling Utah Jazz roster, James nonetheless averaged 24 points, 9.7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals across those three victories to conclude the regular season.

He re-established himself as a central figure in the Lakers’ core, having previously excelled in a supporting capacity for an Los Angeles squad prominently featuring star guards Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves.

Regrettably for the Lakers, coach JJ Redick has stated that both Dončić and Reaves are sidelined “indefinitely,” implying that James will probably require an extraordinary display of skill to advance the fourth-seeded Lakers beyond the fifth-seeded Houston Rockets into the Western Conference semifinals.

Nevertheless, should the Lakers face elimination in the initial round of the playoffs, the potential of the roster featuring Dončić, Reaves, and James might persuade James to extend his tenure in Los Angeles, a city where general manager Rob Pelinka has expressed his desire for “LeBron’s narrative to culminate with his retirement as a Laker.”

Indeed, as per The Athletic’s dispatch, an impressive performance throughout March reshaped the team’s prospects. The success the Lakers experienced during that month is said to have boosted the likelihood of James continuing his career with the purple and gold.

To be precise, Los Angeles achieved a 15-2 record in March. During this period, James participated in 14 matchups, converting 56.2% of his field goals and averaging 18.5 points, 7 assists, and 6.9 rebounds, concurrently with Dončić mounting a notable MVP candidacy, and Reaves delivering eight games with over 20 points, including three consecutive outings exceeding 30 points.

Put differently, James deferred to Dončić and Reaves, yet remained productive, and the three players collectively spearheaded some of the most impressive Lakers basketball witnessed in recent times.

James is currently in the final year of his agreement with the Lakers. Prior to the commencement of the season, valid considerations suggested this might be his concluding year with the organization.

Despite exercising his player option worth $52.6 million last June, the subsequent month brought reports that Los Angeles had not presented him with a contract extension. Furthermore, James was allegedly not forewarned about the Lakers’ sale from the Buss family to Mark Walter, in contrast to the team’s new foundational player, Dončić, who was purportedly informed of the deal.

The shift in leadership was undeniable, generating a considerable amount of public discussion and excitement.

Nevertheless, even after being absent for the initial 14 matches of the season due to a sciatic nerve issue, James resumed his performance level from the previous year, and the Lakers skillfully managed their key players. Through this entire period, James has deeply valued the opportunity to share the court more frequently with his son, Bronny.

“Having the chance to compete alongside him,” James remarked this week, “represents the pinnacle of my professional journey, surpassing all other achievements.”

What other teams might James consider for the upcoming season?

Although the Lakers purportedly hold the most straightforward route to securing James’s signature this offseason, several other organizations are anticipated to vie for his services should he opt against retirement.

Earlier in January, preceding James’s notably poignant away game versus the Cleveland Cavaliers, an ESPN dispatch by Dave McMenamin disclosed that the Cavaliers would enthusiastically greet the Akron, Ohio, native for his twenty-fourth NBA season, marking his third stint with the team that originally drafted him.

A final triumphant return to Cleveland continues to be a potential outcome, as per The Athletic’s Friday publication, which also suggested that James joining forces with Curry in Golden State next season is a conceivable scenario.

However, The Athletic indicates that luxury tax impediments might hinder both prospective teams. Should James wish to pursue playing for either of these franchises, he would reportedly need to exhibit greater financial adaptability, which he is certainly capable of doing if he chooses, considering his wealth, presently estimated by Forbes at $1.4 billion.

The Athletic’s account suggests that, given the current allure of Los Angeles for James, a transition to the Clippers might enter discussions. The Clippers are led by coach Tyronn Lue, who previously coached James when he and the Cavaliers achieved a 3-1 series recovery against a 73-win Warriors squad in the 2016 NBA Finals.

Should James choose to participate in the next season, he is said to desire a location where he can contribute to a team’s pursuit of an NBA championship.
