Reports indicate that Liverpool’s pursuit of 19-year-old Valencia winger David Otorbi may wane now that the Spanish outfit has chosen to renew his deal earlier than planned.
While the Merseyside club were previously prepared to trigger the young Spaniard’s €30 million buy-out clause to secure his transfer to Anfield, his situation has drastically altered.
Besides suffering a physical setback that will halt his on-field development, the Valencia-native has seen his club trigger an early contract extension option. The unannounced agreement is thought to double his termination clause to €60 million.
Valencia double David Otorbi’s buyout clause in effort to ward off Liverpool
“Valencia CF took action by triggering the extension clause embedded in Otorbi’s deal,” according to Fichajes. “Originally slated to expire in 2028, his agreement has been prolonged by three additional years, running through June 2031 .
“This adjustment raises his buy-out amount from €30m to €60m. Additionally, the team has bumped up the player’s wages and plans to review his terms further down the line.
“The clause extension was originally tied to Otorbi making ten appearances featuring at least 45 minutes of action in each. Nevertheless, Valencia opted to fast-track the deal in response to English interest.”
A Spain under-18 international, Otorbi actually debuted for the senior squad back in August 2024, though his entry into the first team has been handled carefully. The teenager failed to feature for even one minute in La Liga during the previous campaign, but manager Javier Aguirre has handed him three starting assignments in the 2026/27 season.
He netted his inaugural La Liga strike during a 2-2 tie with Racing Santander earlier this month, though he was forced off with an injury barely 15 minutes into Saturday’s defeat against Villarreal.
“While Valencia prepares the formal announcement regarding his new contract, the player will concentrate on his rehabilitation,” Fichajes reported.
“Anticipating the January 2027 window, subsequent developments will rest on whether Premier League outfits attempt to strike a deal below €60m or decide against chasing David Otorbi altogether.”
Liverpool, in particular, are hesitant to splash out heavily, having already brought in 23-year-old Victor Munoz alongside 24-year-old Bradley Barcola in the summer window.
Cody Gakpo has kicked off the campaign in strong form and offers versatility across the front line, while keeping a clear route to first-team action for 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha looks increasingly essential with every display he puts in.
The Reds can narrow the margin behind second-placed Arsenal down to three points when the two sides clash in Sunday’s sole Premier League match.
