Barely three months have elapsed in the current Premier League campaign, yet Manchester United find themselves in a position where the fine print of manager Michael Carrick’s contract is being closely scrutinized.

Following a fruitful second stint as caretaker manager that guided the Red Devils to a third-place finish in the league and secured their return to the Champions League, Carrick was handed the job permanently back in May, capping off a brief 40-game season on a high note.

However, the ex-United midfielder’s reign has unraveled rapidly. His side have managed a paltry two victories across their opening 12 games in all tournaments this term, and although the Old Trafford crowd pointed fingers at the squad and board members following Sunday’s defeat against Bournemouth, ultimate accountability will inevitably rest with Carrick before long.

The United faithful made their backing for Carrick clearly heard, displaying far less warmth toward vocal figures Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez. Several other squad members faced the supporters’ wrath, though the harshest criticism was directed, predictably, toward the club’s leadership.

Nevertheless, key figures such as technical director Jason Wilcox and co-owner Jim Ratcliffe are set to outlast the manager they chose to install, leaving United on the verge of perpetuating a pattern of instability whenever they decide to execute another managerial switch.

As reported by talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, who suggests a dismissal is imminent for the head coach, United had notably put safeguards in place in case Carrick’s two-year contract unraveled sooner than anticipated.

“Despite putting pen to paper on a two-year deal during the summer following their return to the Champions League, Carrick’s contract reportedly contains a termination clause,” states Crook.

A chaotic few weeks may lie ahead for the Red Devils, but inserting protective terms into Carrick’s agreement—protecting against their history of flawed choices—represents an unusual moment of sound foresight.

“In the wake of Wednesday’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat away at Como, United started evaluating alternative candidates. Among those under consideration are ex-Bayern Munich and Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann alongside former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe,” Crook adds.

“Head of recruitment Christopher Vivell is championing Nagelsmann’s candidacy, whereas technical director Jason Wilcox prefers a figure proven in the Premier League, such as Howe.”

Wilcox’s appreciation for Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is unlikely to yield results right now, though Crook notes that the former Blackburn Rovers winger is also an admirer of Brighton & Hove Albion chief Fabian Hurzeler.

Pressure on Carrick’s standing escalated sharply following the loss to Como, where team captain Fernandes publicly doubted the tactical approach shortly after Martinez delivered critical remarks aimed at Wilcox.

Television pundit Gary Neville added his voice to former players admonishing Fernandes and Martinez for exposing internal club friction publicly, even as he voiced strong criticism of his own regarding United’s flawed transfer strategy.
