Ex-India international batsman Mohammad Kaif has expressed reservations regarding Kuldeep Yadav retaining his spot in the Indian lineup for the upcoming second Test match in Sri Lanka, hinting that Saransh Jain might be drafted into the squad for the Colombo fixture. India approach this next match riding high on self-belief, following a decisive 165-run triumph over the hosts in the Galle opener. Nonetheless, Kaif is of the opinion that the team management should reassess their spin resources after spotting a strategic deficit in the first game.
During his analysis on Sony Sports, Kaif highlighted the absence of a dedicated off-spin bowler in the Indian squad as a possible vulnerability. He pointed out that Devdutt Padikkal had to be brought on to bowl in Galle, emphasizing the necessity of having an alternative bowling option to target specific batsman matchups.
Mohammad Kaif questions Kuldeep Yadav’s inclusion after minimal impact in the first Test
The left-arm chinaman bowler, Kuldeep, registered rather understated bowling performances during the initial Test match. He managed to secure just a single wicket while leaking 65 runs across his 14 overs during Sri Lanka’s opening turn at the crease. His workload decreased further during the second innings, where he sent down 11 wicketless overs at an expense of 38 runs. Kaif argued that the brief nature of the spells allocated to Kuldeep was a worrying sign.
The retired Indian cricketer remarked that Kuldeep did not receive prolonged bowling stints, indicating that this pattern of deployment could steer the coaching staff’s strategizing for the Colombo match.
“There is one specific cricketer I am concerned about, and that is Kuldeep Yadav. It is highly probable he won’t feature in the forthcoming game. Every time he was brought into the attack, his spells were brief. He was never allowed to settle into a long rhythm. Saransh Jain, on the other hand, is a proper off-spinner. The reason Padikkal was introduced to bowl was that the absence of a regular off-spinner became glaringly obvious on the field,” stated Kaif.
Saransh Jain might offer the required tactical alternative
Kaif asserts that Saransh represents a viable option should the team management determine that an off-break bowler is required for the anticipated track conditions in Colombo. The retired batsman drew particular attention to the instance when Devdutt Padikkal was handed the ball, asserting that this tactical move laid bare the lack of an experienced off-spinner within the current bowling resources.
“With two left-handed batsmen settled at the crease, the captain was actively seeking an off-spinner. Should the pitch turn out to be slow and conducive to spin, the combination of Kuldeep’s restricted usage and the clear need for an off-spinner might force this selection change. My expectation is that Kuldeep Yadav could miss out on the starting lineup, clearing the path for Saransh Jain to debut in Colombo,” Kaif continued.
Consequently, the team management is likely to grapple with a selection conundrum ahead of the next match. While Kuldeep presents a unique challenge with his wrist-spin, Saransh would offer the more orthodox off-spin dimension, which could prove highly effective against the left-hand heavy Sri Lankan batting order. As the second Test approaches, set to commence in Colombo this Sunday (August 23), the decision-makers must weigh the benefits of keeping a winning side against adjusting for strategic harmony.
