NBA Finals: MSG Sports calls NYC Mayor & Police ‘party poopers’ over Game 4 security.

The fourth contest of the NBA championship series, featuring the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks, is slated for Wednesday evening at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

The third matchup was largely dominated by the presence of former President Donald Trump, resulting in elevated security protocols, such as a designated restricted area surrounding the Garden and the annulment of the public viewing event outside the venue.

Despite the former president not being anticipated at Wednesday evening’s event, enhanced security measures persist. The New York Police Department declared that as of 4 p.m. Eastern Time, a protected perimeter would again be established around Madison Square Garden, encompassing West 29th Street to West 35th Street, between Sixth and Eighth Avenues, complete with screening checkpoints.

Nonetheless, the public viewing gathering at Madison Square Garden, which was absent on Monday night, will resume as a sanctioned ticket-only function, according to New York City’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

The ongoing application of these more stringent security provisions has not met with universal approval.

Madison Square Garden Sports issued a formal declaration denouncing the supplementary security undertakings, a statement publicized by SNYtv correspondent Ian Begley, attributing the amplified security to Mayor Mamdani and police commissioner Jessica Tisch.

This memorandum bears the title “Mayor Mamdani and Police Commissioner Tisch: New York City’s Foremost Party Spoilers.”

Within the document, MSG Sports urged the removal of these limitations, including the security checks, asserting that the mayor and police commissioner “evidently wish to prevent these festive occasions.”

The declaration particularly highlighted the persistence of heightened security protocols, notwithstanding the absence of former President Trump. The memo stated, “It is now evident that these constraints were never about the President; rather, they served as a convenient justification to regulate how and when Knicks supporters commemorate.”

Even with the former president not present, numerous issues still exist that justify supplementary safety precautions. Following Game 3, twenty-one individuals were apprehended subsequent to multiple altercations erupting at a public viewing event in Bryant Park. Incidents of Knicks supporters jointly assaulting Spurs fans also circulated widely on social media platforms.

Victor Wembanyama, a prominent player for the Spurs, joined several other NBA Finals participants in denouncing the post-game violence, remarking, “We must remember this is merely a game. We are simply engaging in a contest. While I advocate for fervor, mutual respect is paramount. This conduct is intolerable.”

The Knicks currently hold a 2-1 advantage in the series; however, they suffered a defeat in Game 3 on their home turf, thereby concluding a 13-game postseason winning streak. New York is unable to secure the series victory on Wednesday evening, but a win would establish a 3-1 lead heading to San Antonio, placing the Knicks a single triumph away from their inaugural NBA championship since 1973.
