Norrie out of Italian Open

The top British tennis player, Cameron Norrie, was eliminated from the Italian Open during the second round, having been defeated in straight sets by Thiago Agustin Tirante of Argentina.

The player seeded 17th suffered a 6-3, 7-5 loss against Tirante, who currently holds his highest-ever world ranking at 69.

Norrie, globally ranked 19th, was participating in his initial contest following a first-round exemption. He found himself at an immediate disadvantage, dropping his opening service game and quickly falling behind 3-0 in the first set, which Tirante, who was not seeded, concluded by serving it out in 34 minutes.

The subsequent set unfolded with greater intensity, as both competitors successfully held their serves until Tirante secured a break, moving ahead 6-5, after which the 25-year-old executed a decisive service game without conceding a point to seal the match.

The departure of the 30-year-old Norrie signals the conclusion of British participation in the singles events in Rome, following Katie Boulter’s defeat to Eva Lys of Germany in the opening round of the women’s tournament on Wednesday.

Several British athletes, including Jack Draper, Emma Raducanu, and Sonay Kartal, are not competing in this year’s tournament because of various health and physical ailments.

Tirante, currently holding the position of Argentina’s seventh-highest ranked male player, is slated to compete against either Italy’s tenth-seeded Flavio Cobolli or Terence Atmane from France in the upcoming third round.
