After exiting during the opening half due to a chest issue, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson re-entered the Week 8 “Thursday Night Football” game versus the Carolina Panthers during the third period. He was taken to a medical facility in close proximity to Lambeau Field to undergo preventative evaluations, arriving back at the venue soon after the intermission. Green Bay originally listed his status as questionable, but he returned to action once medical personnel gave him the green light.
Upon returning to Lambeau Field via an ambulance, Watson jogged into the dressing area, spending roughly three minutes getting equipped to get back on the gridiron. According to Prime Video’s Kaylee Hartung, he stepped out to the bench area wearing extra rib protection and signaled toward the bottom right portion of his torso when squad members asked about his health.
“It was tough,” Watson remarked to Hartung while appearing on the postgame broadcast. “I never wanted to go. I was hoping they would let me off. I said I was feeling better once I kind of caught my breath. They said there was a couple of signs that made them have to take me over there. It is what it is. I was just praying that it was good enough to where I could come back out here. Thankfully it was, and I was able to get back out. I’m trying to be on the football field. That’s first and foremost for me.”
Watson revealed that he coughed up blood right after the impact, prompting the Green Bay medical crew to send him for hospital evaluation. Medical examinations cleared him of any internal hemorrhaging, allowing him to play again. While awaiting his test findings in his hospital suite, he kept tabs on the contest by following the play-by-play updates.
The health scare happened during the primary highlight of the first half—a 53-yard catch that paved the way for Green Bay’s second score of the evening. Watson crashed into Carolina defensive back Will Lee III, who was likewise hurt during the collision. The Panthers subsequently designated Lee as doubtful to step back onto the field because of a hamstring strain.
Prior to his temporary departure, Watson was turning in a dominant outing. He stood as the top receiver over the first two quarters, racking up 100 receiving yards on six receptions. His talent for creating space against Carolina’s struggling defensive backfield played a major role in signal-caller Jordan Love connecting on 17 of his opening 20 pass attempts during the evening.
Green Bay immediately targeted Watson on a throw during his initial snap following his hospital return; though that attempt fell incomplete, he secured two additional catches in the final period. The second of those receptions virtually sealed the victory, converting a critical third down that permitted Green Bay to burn crucial game clock and leave Carolina with only a few remaining seconds on their last drive.
In Watson’s absence, Matthew Golden took over as the primary target for the Green Bay passing attack. He hauled in a scoring strike on the Packers’ initial drive following Watson’s exit, bouncing back after putting a potential touchdown catch on the turf just one play earlier. Meanwhile, Tucker Kraft saw expanded usage deep down the field and recorded Green Bay’s opening touchdown during Thursday’s game.
Regrettably, health setbacks have significantly shaped Watson’s trajectory in the NFL. His medical record is lengthier than average, featuring another chest issue, three pulled hamstrings, a sprained ankle, three knee contusions, and a torn ACL. Additionally, he suffered a concussion in his 2022 debut campaign. Overall, Watson has been sidelined for 20 contests and has not managed to complete a full season through his five years in the professional ranks.
