A spot in November’s Davis Cup Finals has been secured by Great Britain, following a doubles victory from Henry Patten and Neal Skupski that established an unbeatable 3-0 advantage in their qualifying clash with Ecuador.
On Saturday, Toby Samuel and Arthur Fery each claimed victories in their respective singles encounters in front of a packed crowd at London’s Copper Box Arena, giving the British team a perfect start in the best-of-five series.
On Sunday, Patten and Skupski entered the court and sealed Great Britain’s place in the ‘Final Eight’ tournament in Bologna at the first possible chance, securing a 6-3 6-4 triumph over Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo.
“We feel fantastic,” Patten remarked during his post-match interview on the court.
“[Captain] Leon [Smith] was motivating us during the team discussion, advising us to prepare for the singles, so we are incredibly pleased to seal the victory in our very first match.”
The British squad had been waiting to return to the Davis Cup’s knockout phase since 2023, and despite facing an unfancied Ecuador team, questions remained about whether captain Leon Smith’s young and untested lineup in London could halt that drought.
A challenging campaign was cut short by Jack Draper, while injuries ruled out both Jan Choinski and Jacob Fearnley from selection.
The team suffered another setback on Friday when Cameron Norrie, the British number two, had to withdraw after experiencing discomfort in his arm during a training run.
Nevertheless, Samuel made a strong impression on his Davis Cup debut, building on a sensational season that saw him climb from outside the top 250 to 95th in the world rankings.
Only a few weeks following his maiden Grand Slam match victory at the US Open, the 24-year-old shook off early anxiety to stage a comeback from a set behind, defeating Andres Andrade 4-6 6-4 6-1.
At the same time, Fery put on a confident display in only his second Davis Cup match, with the British top seed securing a dominant 7-5 6-0 triumph over Alvaro Guillen Meza.
With world-class Patten and newly crowned US Open victor Skupski ready for Sunday’s doubles match, Great Britain was firmly positioned to wrap up the tie.
Despite their lack of partnership on the regular ATP Tour, the duo linked up seamlessly, preventing their Ecuadorian opponents from generating even a single break point opportunity.
“My initial appearance came back in 2019 alongside players like Jamie Murray, Andy Murray, and Evo [Dan Evans], and I suppose I’m now the veteran of this group,” noted 36-year-old Skupski, playing in his 16th Davis Cup tie.
“It has been incredible to return to the squad, it’s been an intense 18 months, and representing your nation is an incredible privilege, particularly before a home audience that turned out to back us the way you did—it was fantastic.”
