The final round of the PGA Championship is upon us, and the contest for the Wanamaker Trophy remains wide open.
Alex Smalley established a two-stroke advantage over his rivals through a late burst of play. Smalley, who is still seeking his inaugural PGA Tour triumph, carded a birdie on Saturday’s concluding hole, bringing his total for the week to 6-under.
Nevertheless, a substantial group of 21 players finds themselves within four strokes of Smalley as they head into the decisive round. Jon Rahm is one of five golfers currently at 4-under. Rory McIlroy mounted a considerable charge during the early pairings on Saturday as well. After commencing the day at 1-over, he recorded an excellent 4-under 66 in the third round, placing him just one shot behind the then-leaders. He now stands at 3-under for the event, three strokes adrift of Smalley, alongside Xander Schauffele, Patrick Reed, and Maverick McNealy.
Smalley and Matti Schmid are scheduled to comprise the ultimate pairing on Sunday, with their initial shot set for 2:35 p.m. ET.
