Riot Games needs to save struggling VALORANT Game Changers.

In 2021, Riot Games launched VALORANT Game Changers, establishing a platform for underrepresented genders to exhibit their talents and participate in worldwide competition. This yearly circuit offered an environment for growth and security, a feat not entirely accomplished by other games, which was profoundly significant.

To date, four Game Changers world champions have been celebrated; yet, the initial allure that captivated both spectators and participants several years prior appears to have diminished.

Audience numbers have decreased, prominent organizations have withdrawn their support, promotional efforts have become less vigorous, and pervasive negativity persists, leading to the inquiry: Is this initiative merely a costly promotional tactic, or does Riot genuinely commit to Game Changers?

From Landmark Achievements to Gradual Waning

Whether it was G2 Gozen performing “I Want It That Way” in unison while securing the inaugural Championship trophy in 2022, Shopify Rebellion claiming consecutive victories in 2023 and 2024, or Natália “daiki” Vilela ultimately guiding Team Liquid Brazil to a Champions title with an exceptional display in 2025, VALORANT Game Changers has furnished us with numerous unforgettable instances.

This represented a refreshing development within VALORANT esports, culminating in Game Changers Championship 2024 achieving an unprecedented peak viewership exceeding 450,000. Nevertheless, enthusiasm gradually waned due to insufficient marketing for the various regional leagues.

The situation deteriorated to where several acquaintances of mine, dedicated followers of the competitive circuit, were unaware of current Game Changers events. Audience figures also suffered, with the 2025 Championship registering its lowest peak viewership to date, approximately 220,000.

Furthermore, despite seemingly robust prize pools in documentation, these amounts proved barely adequate to provide ongoing financial stability for participating teams.

Although arguments might be made for allocating a segment of VCT partnership/franchise system earnings to the Game Changers framework, it is common knowledge that organizations frequently face difficulties in achieving sufficient profitability, or any profit whatsoever.

Consequently, several top-tier organizations have departed from this arena, with the most recent being 100 Thieves, subsequent to the withdrawals of Cloud9 and YFP.

**Lydia “lidyuh” Wilson**, a GC player for 100 Thieves, conveyed to Esports Insider, “It deeply saddens me to witness something I invested so much time and dedication into being dismantled in this manner.”

Riot’s Aspirations Versus Current Circumstances

My conversation with Ashley Washington, Game Changers EMEA Product Lead, in 2024, highlighted Riot Games’ profound commitment and strategic outlook for Game Changers. The developer has consistently affirmed its intention to avoid implementing a partnership model for GC, aiming instead to establish a route for marginalized genders to advance into VCT.

Nevertheless, numerous obstacles impede the realization of this objective. Principally, more robust encouragements are required to motivate organizations to commit to identifying and cultivating emerging talent. Moreover, the pervasive problem of toxicity, a constant challenge for Game Changers participants, remains a significant concern.

An example of this is **Ava ‘florescent’ Eugene**, who achieved a milestone by joining Apeks in VCT EMEA; yet, she contended not only with exhaustion from intense competition and public scrutiny but also, during live performances, encountered intermittent sexist comments in the chat.

Furthermore, despite being exonerated from accusations of sexual assault, she persists in enduring abuse from individuals who, shielded by anonymity, engage in online aggression. Numerous other instances exist, though I will refrain from detailing them all in this article.

Finally, many Game Changers participants possess the full capability to compete alongside male players in VCT. Regrettably, some are denied trial opportunities simply because specific players or staff express discomfort playing with women. Consider this: it’s 2026, and this continues to be a hurdle for skilled individuals such as **Melanie ‘meL’ Capone**.

meL recounted, “I’ve been denied opportunities to trial for co-ed VALORANT teams with a handful of talented co-ed rosters over the years for reasons that include teams not wanting to pay a buyout for me and because I was viewed as, and I quote, ‘too valuable of an asset to release this close to partnership selection when I’m so pivotal to my org’s application,’” said meL.

“In one particular instance, my candidacy was under review, but a T1 team soon relayed to me that a particular player felt uneasy about playing with a woman.”

Essentially, individuals who publicly champion marginalized genders do not consistently maintain the same stance in private.

Consequently, what actions can be undertaken to sustain and expand VALORANT Game Changers?

Female Representation in Esports: A Promising Prospect Deserving of Investment

Riot Games currently surpasses most other titles in its efforts, yet significant scope for enhancement remains in various aspects. For example, marketing expenditure could see an increase. Should budgetary limitations arise from economic or internal pressures, effective organic marketing strategies are always feasible. I personally have some concepts in mind.

Furthermore, an expansion in the number of mixed-gender competitions would be beneficial, accompanied by inducements for organizations supporting Game Changers, akin to Academy or Affiliate team frameworks. Riot might also arrange co-ed tournaments that award supplementary VCT circuit points, or implement in-game collectibles with profits distributed directly to GC teams.

In 2024, Riot Games additionally revealed its Upward Player Mobility program, which granted World Championship teams a direct invitation to Challengers League qualifiers, a benefit already realized by organizations such as Shopify Rebellion.

Thus, advancements are occurring in this regard, and a recent announcement confirmed that “a portion of the funds will be dedicated to Game Changers each year.” Integrating GC into the **Esports World Cup**, mirroring its inclusion for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, could similarly prove to be an excellent strategic decision.

Should Riot succeed in reinforcing its foundational aspects while persistently introducing novel programs, Game Changers possesses the potential to genuinely flourish, propelling us toward an environment that dismantles gender barriers and solidifies VALORANT’s position as a genuinely all-encompassing esport.
