Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy was unable to communicate with his team as he typically does during halftime on Sunday during their overtime victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
On his way to his halftime interview at Raymond James Stadium, McCarthy seemingly sustained an ankle injury.
Television cameras did not seem to capture the injury on tape. However, McCarthy was seen struggling as he attempted to walk off the field during halftime. Ultimately, he opted to go directly into the blue medical tent situated on the sideline, where he remained throughout the halftime period. He did not return to the locker room to speak to the Steelers, reappearing with the team at the beginning of the third quarter.
Regardless of the injury, McCarthy continued to coach the team effectively in the second half. It appeared that his ankle injury was relatively minor after all.
Although the team found themselves down by 13 points in the fourth quarter, Aaron Rodgers guided the Steelers to a stunning comeback that forced overtime. He later connected with Germie Bernard for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the extra period as well. This touchdown marked Bernard’s first in his career, contributing to the Steelers’ second consecutive win.
Rodgers completed 33 of 49 passes for a total of 253 yards, along with two touchdowns and one interception in the victory, which improved the Steelers’ record to 4-2 for the season. They find themselves in a strong position in the AFC North standings, but the victory in Tampa was far more complex than it should have been. Rodgers had a chance to lock in the win during regulation but failed to score from the 3-yard line following Buccaneers quarterback Jalon Daniels’ second interception of the fourth quarter.
However, a win is indeed a win, and McCarthy’s injury at halftime did not seem to significantly impact him in the end. He and the Steelers can return home feeling satisfied.
