Svitolina and Kostyuk vie for semi-final and history for Ukraine

Seventh seed Svitolina and 15th-ranked Kostyuk stand as two of merely three Ukrainian women to have advanced to the singles quarter-finals at Roland Garros within the Open era.

Yet, the nation’s profound talent has been clearly demonstrated throughout this current fortnight, with four female players from Ukraine progressing to the third round.

Furthermore, this marks only the second occasion that two Ukrainian competitors have reached the quarter-final stage of a major tennis tournament.

Four-time major semi-finalist Svitolina has made it to her sixth French Open quarter-final, and the 31-year-old has now reached the final eight of a Grand Slam on seven occasions since her return to the circuit three years ago after welcoming her daughter.

For Kostyuk, who is eight years younger than Svitolina, this is merely the second time she has advanced to this stage in one of the sport’s premier events. She also reached the final eight at the 2024 Australian Open.

When discussing her upcoming match against her compatriot, Kostyuk remarked: “We share a really positive connection. She is a legend of Ukrainian tennis, and it’s an immense privilege to compete on the same court with her.”

“She has opened doors for numerous Ukrainian girls and boys. She’s performing exceptionally well, particularly this year; her achievements are astounding. I am incredibly eager for this upcoming match.”
