👀 Five key storylines for Thursday

  1. Tampa Bay secures Vita Vea with a $30 million contract extension. Following a challenging negotiation period, the Buccaneers have finalized a one-year extension worth $30 million for their standout defensive tackle, securing his services until 2027. Earlier in the offseason, Vea had requested a trade and sat out parts of training camp. With the two-time Pro Bowl selection returning to anchor the defensive line, focus now shifts to quarterback Baker Mayfield’s status, as ongoing contract talks have reportedly hit a standstill.
  2. NCAA return approved for select NFL rookies. In another bizarre twist for collegiate football, several athletes from the 2026 NFL rookie class are now permitted to go back to college. Chief among them is ex-LSU pass rusher Jack Pyburn, currently participating in the Buccaneers’ training camp. Pyburn is part of a group of 16 players who secured a temporary restraining order from a judge in Louisiana on Wednesday. While the NCAA might have avoided this mess by proactively introducing a five-year eligibility rule, such foresight was apparently not on their agenda.
  3. Seattle reaches agreement with former All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs. The reigning league champions are bolstering their defensive backfield with an elite veteran, as Diggs intends to ink a one-year contract with the Seahawks following a workout with Detroit earlier this spring. Though Diggs recorded a league-high 11 interceptions back in 2021, his performance has slid in the years since. Joining a highly talented roster in Seattle might provide him the perfect opportunity to revitalize his play.
  4. Wings standout Azzi Fudd sidelined for the year due to surgery. In a devastating development for Dallas, Fudd’s campaign is officially over as she undergoes a procedure to address a lingering right knee injury. Selected first overall in the 2026 draft, she has been out of action since August 5 while managing the issue. Across 30 appearances during her debut season, she contributed averages of 13.1 points, 1.8 assists, and 1.7 rebounds. Sidelining Fudd deals a massive setback to a Wings team already struggling to stay in postseason contention.
  5. Houston wide receiver Jayden Higgins suffers season-ending torn ACL. Regrettably, the injury updates continue to disappoint today. Higgins, who was projected to have a breakout sophomore campaign, has torn his ACL during summer workouts and will miss the entire season. Additionally, New Orleans running back Alvin Kamara is likely to sit out a minimum of one contest due to a sprained MCL. 🏈 Featured read: The NFL’s 30 best players age 30 or older

CBS Sports Design

While many claim that age is merely a statistic, the NFL often proves otherwise. Reaching the age of 30 typically signals the beginning of a player’s decline, accelerated by physical wear, dropping production, or a combination of both.

However, the elite athletes featured on our list defy those odds entirely.

The editorial team at CBS Sports has compiled and ranked the thirty premier players aged 30 and older. Although professional football favors youth, these seasoned pros continue to dominate. For instance, Matthew Stafford secured an MVP award at 37 years old, while Myles Garrett established a new single-season sack milestone right at age 30.

We also have Christian McCaffrey, who bounced back from a health-compromised 2024 season to rack up 2,126 total yards from scrimmage this past year. According to analyst Tyler Sullivan, durability is the sole obstacle that can impede the 49ers dynamic offensive threat.

  • Sullivan: “In his previous campaign, McCaffrey earned Comeback Player of the Year honors after putting up remarkable numbers as both a ball-carrier and a target in the passing game. He recorded his third career season boasting over 1,000 rushing yards alongside 100 catches. Furthermore, it marked his third instance achieving over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns, matching a historic record held by LaDainian Tomlinson.”

You can check out the complete rankings right here, but here is a glance at how the middle tier of the list looks:

20. Seahawks DT Leonard Williams
19. Chiefs DT Chris Jones
18. Lions QB Jared Goff
17. Chargers Derwin James
16. Bears Joe Thuney

Some fantasy football players might hesitate to draft McCaffrey early due to his age and past medical chart. Do not worry—our elite fantasy analysis crew is here to help. Analyst Heath Cummings has recently refreshed his running back tier rankings, keeping McCaffrey firmly positioned at the top.

New England’s Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown will likely qualify for next year’s veteran list, but currently, the 29-year-old wideout is dominating against his ex-squad during joint practice sessions in Foxborough.

🏀 NBA front office evaluation: Knicks climb ahead of Celtics

Adam Eargle, CBS Sports

Constructing an NBA championship roster can be achieved through various strategies. Fortunately, Knicks executive Leon Rose demonstrated this effectively over the past year by assembling the team’s first title-winning squad since 1973.

New York employed an unconventional blueprint to reach the top, landing them at the second spot in our yearly front office rankings. The organization did not draft any of its starting five, and skeptics previously questioned if Jalen Brunson possessed the leadership qualities necessary to spearhead a championship run.

As CBS analyst Sam Quinn details, the response to those doubts was a definitive “Yes.”

  • Quinn: “Leon Rose pulled off one of the most remarkable roster-construction achievements in basketball history. The Knicks managed to win a championship without a single draft pick in their starting lineup. The sole other title team to accomplish this was the 2019-20 Lakers, who acquired LeBron James in free agency, who subsequently brought in Anthony Davis. Conversely, New York built its championship squad around a former second-round selection and his collegiate teammates.”

Following an extended run in the second position, the Celtics have dropped to third place after a frustrating postseason exit and the blockbuster Jaylen Brown transaction. Although that decision drew heavy criticism, team owner Bill Chisholm maintains that Brad Stevens and the front office group remain the brightest minds in the sport.

In other news, the franchise ranked twelfth on our list executed a mid-week move. The Cavaliers traded for Peyton Watson from the Nuggets, sparking a significant discussion regarding Denver’s long-term direction.
