The team management of India’s test side faces a fascinating selection dilemma when Sai Sudharsan recovers from his fitness issues. During the opening Test match against Sri Lanka, the crucial one-down spot was occupied by Devdutt Padikkal, who seized the opportunity with a spectacular display of batting in Galle. His crucial contributions guided the national team to a comprehensive 165-run triumph and fetched him the Player of the Match honors. Given the outstanding red-ball credentials of both players, ex-Indian opening batsman Wasim Jaffer has shared his perspective on the specific traits he prefers for the number three slot.

With Sudharsan sidelined due to a right toe ailment, Padikkal was elevated to the crucial one-down position. The elegant left-handed batsman capitalized fully, compiling a brilliant 167 off 230 deliveries during the initial innings and following it up with a vital 44 off 75 balls in his second outing. In a discussion on his personal YouTube channel, Jaffer expressed his view that Padikkal deserves to retain his spot in the playing eleven even after Sudharsan is declared fit.
The ex-cricketer highlighted Padikkal’s superb domestic record, pointing out his knack for converting starts into massive centuries and double-tons for his state side, Karnataka. Additionally, Jaffer noted that Padikkal’s batting mindset aligns well with the team’s needs. He emphasized the southpaw’s natural tendency to maintain a high strike rate and transfer the pressure back onto the rival bowling attack.
“In my view, Devdutt deserves an extended run because of his outstanding domestic credentials. He has a proven track record of hitting massive hundreds and double-centuries for Karnataka. Being a left-hander who bats with positive intent, his style fits perfectly with modern cricket, which demands a proactive approach,” Jaffer remarkerd.

While recognizing Sudharsan’s undeniable talent, Jaffer pointed out that the young prospect has age on his side to cement his place in the longest format. Although the 24-year-old has established his reputation in the IPL, even securing an Orange Cap, Jaffer perceives his playing style to be more traditional in comparison to Padikkal’s fluent strokeplay.
“I believe time is on Sai Sudharsan’s side. He leans more towards a classical style of batting. Despite his success in the IPL, including winning the Orange Cap, I feel Devdutt currently holds a slight advantage for this specific position,” Jaffer observed.
Both players boast highly respectable statistics in multi-day cricket. Padikkal has compiled 4,011 runs across 57 red-ball matches with an average of 44.56, registering 10 hundreds and 21 half-centuries. On the other hand, Sudharsan has scored 3,004 runs in 42 matches averaging 42.91, featuring 10 centuries and 10 fifties. Given how effectively Padikkal capitalized on his chance against Sri Lanka, the team management will face a tough choice once Sudharsan is ready to rejoin the squad.
